If you didn't pay some upfront, then I suppose the monthly subscription would be higher in order for DirecTV to cover the cost.

I'd liken it to the first month payment on an apartment lease.

but would I get a good picture on the recorded shows having the HD receiver on a different input?

Connect the HD receiver to either the HDMI or component input. The SD receiver should connect to a S-video or composite (A/V) input. Of course the SD picture won't be as good as HD, but it will be as good as you can get.
