Boy this sure doesn't give me a warm & fuzzy about D* adding any more (real, national) HD channels. (& NOT crap that nobody has even heard of!)

DirecTV Could Pare Some Networks - 2010-12-02 23:29:42 | Multichannel News

Satellite Giant to Look at Repackaging, Removing Some Channels

New York - DirecTV will look long and hard at its programming lineup in an ongoing effort to keep programming costs in check, including paring channels that are lacking in viewership, executive vice president of content strategy and development Derek Chang said at the satellite giant's Investor Day conference here Thursday.
Chang said that historically DirecTV had carried some networks simply because cable lacked the channel capacity. But in the current 200-plus channel universe, having an extra network or two that your competitor doesn't isn't the advantage it used to be.
"In our battle to manage our economics, we will look to repackage channels where we have over-distributed, or frankly just to remove certain channels from our platform if they are not relevant," Chang said at the conference. "Is there a place for channels that only serve a small fraction of our audience? Should we have to pay retrans fees and continue to carry channels which were once considered to be part of the equation when we didn't pay retrans fees? As the marketplace changes, these questions become more important for our entire industry."
Chang added that distributors have managed to whether the storm when channels have gone dark during carriage disputes - he pointed to Cablevision Systems, which did without the Fox broadcasting network for three weeks earlier this year and Dish Network, which didn't carry 19 Fox regional sports networks for nearly a month.
DirecTV itself ceased to carry the G4 network in November - which Chang said has not been missed - and does not carry regional sports networks in Portland, Ore., and New Orleans.
"My sense is that we and all other distributors will continue to take a sharper look at the channels we carry and determine which ones are necessary, which ones may be not necessary or may just cost too much for what they are," Chang said.

Personally I am ok with this. They won't drop anything major, but when a cable network declines year after year (G4 is a great example) and won't drop the price they need to be put in check. I'm sure Directv has a very solid knowledge of which networks have viewership on their service, and the increases and decreases.

Makes perfectly good business sense too me. Why should any business carry any inventory that does not sell?

If I counted the channels I watch on a regular basis I could do it on one hand and have a few fingers left over.

The issue is my favorite channel might not be yours. So picking what to get rid of is a very complex situation.

Comcast has let G4 get to the level of one of those "local public access" channels. Reruns of Cops from the 90s and before are some of its top programming. :) Comcast should be paying carriers to take that channel, not asking for payment for it.

Any ideas on what channels are on the chopping block? they can start with all of those advertising channels in the 80's and 90's.

They are paid to put those things on the air and you can bet they will never, ever go away, as long as the checks are being cut to D* or any other pay-TV provider. Raises their profits too much to cut those channels from the lineup.

Do the religious channels pay D* to be carried? Are they FREE to the companies like D* and E*? If not, they should all be dropped as they are already available via other means, if someone HAS to have them (i.e. GloryStar has lots of them, for FREE. They say they have over 60 channels, if someone wants them. Free Christian Satellite Television - No Monthly Fees from Glorystar Christian Satellite!)

I'm put off by the author's suggestion that Portland area viewers aren't missing CSNNW. If the Oregon Ducks hadn't been so good this year (and, as a result, more of their games had been on Comcast), there would have been some serious repercussions.

I wish D* house clean, meaning channels that are useless for the majority of customers. I want the channel I have in HD don't waste bandwidth in stupid channels, and sorry for ben a little rude about the whole thin

I would have an angry wife if the axe hit HGTV or TLC and they better leave Intervention alone too! (I live by the old adage "Happy wife, happy life" ;-D

I can say with almost 100% certainty that those two channels will not be axed. They are two of the more popular channels on cable/satellite

I would suggest they axe most of the MTV networks. I don't think they're relevant anymore.

As long as they have the Nickelodeon Channels at the top of the ratings, the MTV channels will be dumped on as a part of the packages by Viacom. Maybe they will offer packages without any of them? I could care less if I got anything that was on either the MTVs, Nickelodeons, etc. channels.

I doubt this will ever happen, though, as Viacom owns too many networks that lots of people want. MTV Networks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That pretty much tells what channels will NOT be dropped. What's needed is an all-inclusive listing of ALL cable channels and their rankings. I think people would discover many, many channels that they'd never heard of.

I do have to wonder, the article in the original post makes no mention of D* lowering prices considering they'd get rid of channels. Getting rid of one channel, i.e. G4, hardly warrants a price change. But multiple channels ?

Even though I am in favor of companies reducing inventory on items that do not sell, I can probably say that one channel I do watch very often just may be one of those dropped, VH1 Classic. This is the ONLY "MTV" (not Viacom) channel I watch. I will be disappointed if they drop it, but I will also understand that it may be necessary. I just hope they do not block out the hours I watch it, the hours that show "That Metal Show" and "Metal Mania"

Or reduction in inventor INSTEAD of a price increase or a less of an increase than they would normally do
