DirecTV CEO: Won't Gear Future Initiatives To TiVo

Tuesday November 2, 5:45 PM EST

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--TiVo Inc.'s (TIVO) position as DirecTV's (DTV) primary supplier of digital video recorders appear numbered.

DirecTV Chief Executive Chase Carey, speaking in an interview with Dow Jones on Tuesday, said the partnership will continue but noted that "as we go forward, the core of our initiatives won't be geared to TiVo."

Carey said the company would be looking for alternative providers though he declined to say what other technology provider DirecTV might consider.

TiVo's relationship with the direct-to-home satellite provider has been seen as rocky since media conglomerate News Corp. (NWS) took over control of DirecTV about a year ago. Another News Corp. company, NDS (NNDS), made clear its ambitions to break into the U.S. DVR market. Meanwhile, DirecTV's new management left the door open to additional suppliers.

TiVo has been heavily dependent on its relationship with DirecTV, though it's been trying to boost the profile of its independent, stand-alone products. In the second quarter, TiVo added 288,000 new customers, of which 225,000 were through DirecTV.

Both companies had been careful to emphasize that the relationship has not changed course, despite a number of events that rattled TiVo investors.

In May, the company sold its set-top box manufacturing business to French consumer electronics maker Thomson (TMS) for $250 million. As part of the transaction, Thomson agreed to become DirecTV's primary set-top box supplier for the next five years. Thomson said it would be involved in the development of new boxes and manufacture high-definition and digital video recorder set-top units. Thomson has said it would be licensing TiVo's DVR technology.

Then in June, DirecTV Vice Chairman Eddy Hartenstein stepped down from TiVo's board of directors after an eight-month commitment. DirecTV also sold its TiVo stake, citing its efforts to rid itself of noncore assets.

DirecTV's determination to put TiVo on the sidelines appears part of an effort to keep technology developments in-house.

Last month at an investor conference, Carey said DirecTV is interested in developing a movies-on-demand service but wouldn't consider the one currently being developed by TiVo and Netflix Inc. (NFLX).

"We don't need middlemen to do that...we can certainly manage that process," he said.

Meanwhile, interest in DVRs is proving a push for both DirecTV and TiVo. DirecTV said Tuesday it added 484,000 new subscribers during the quarter, thanks in part to demand for DVRs. The company said it's stepped up marketing of DVRs in the current fourth quarter and reduced the price of the units by $50.

Well it looks like we can officially kiss 4.0 and HMO goodbye. I guess it is time to head to DD to get the "fixes" for this problem.

I know that D* can save a buck or two by cutting tivo out of their DVRs, but from a consumer's standpoint I have to wonder if the next gen of D* dvr products will be as easy to use, or as intuitive as the tivo unit. The fact that D* even had a built-in tivo is what brought me back to them in the first place... If i have to switch DVRs, I may have to take a more serious look at the all in one that COX cable (shutter) has to offer.... At least I won't be getting gouged $1,000 for a tuner box...

Even if you can save a little money, I have to say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

What kind of direction is D* going? Anyone have any ideas? I was kinda waiting on the next generation of the HD DVR unit....I mean this time last year I got the new Sony HD300...then D* takes over their STB....the Sony discontinues along with alot of others. What kind of game plan is going on?

I agree, Barney... from what i've been reading here on the boards, D* is taking back control of all of the STBs. I would much rather see some different options available, then just the few boxes that D* will inevitably offer (guessing 2 DVRs 1 high def and 1 std def, and 2 non DVR boxes). I know that all DVR's work basically the same way, but from a marketing standpoint, more people who aren't tech savy would know right away what tivo is, rather than a "DVR". Is the money that D* will save by cutting out the tivo brand technology worth the lost marketing opportunity that they have now?

well, i did have the privilege of watching the chat today about the E* announcement where they dropped the cost of their DVR, and I can tell you that the vendors that just bought dish 921s and will lose money are pretty hacked off about it... D* really should think now about that $1,000 price tag.... switching to E* has never been this appealing.

I agree, if I weren't so "pro" D* I would dump my HR10-250 and jump in a heartbeat! I posted my letter from D* in the rant thread I posted, they have NO plan to upgrade from 3.x.x and will not offer HMO. I am going to get a couple HDVR2 off eBay that already have HMO enabled. Screw D*

TiVo will be supported for at least the next 5 years, they just wont be upgraded nor in future generations.

slacker, I'm also a fan of D*. I'll stick it out for awhile & see how the new "bird" turns out this May-June....After that....I'm really going to think about D* & my options. :(
If VOOM gets picked up by E*, that could be very interesting.......

Barney

i'll wait on the new birds too... there are so many ppl wanting to dump V* or E* or cable, I guess the grass always seems greener. My only concerns with D* are the slow rate of adding more HD content, and the prices of the HD tuners (which will always be expensive if D* brings all the tuners 'in-house').

DIRECTV is working on their own NDS based DVR, from what I am heariing it will be expandable to serve additional rooms in your house by just dropping in an add on card. I a told we should see the new DVR at CES in January.

This would coincide with their normal approach ... leave the fallen behind. It is too bad, I am sure the NDS product will be nice and I am sure it will have a leg up on TiVo, it is just too bad that they make us use old technology. I am in in the crowd that says TiVo is the end all be all either. I would honestly like to see many options like Moxi or Ucentric along side TiVo. At TCF those that have seen the NDS product in the UK like it ... can't ask for more than for TCF'ers to give the nod.

Well, eventhough I love that little tivo guy, I'm sure that if there was an alternative that is just as good, that I would happily make the switch providing that the new hardware offered what I'm looking for.
To be honest, I'm still wondering why we're paying monthly subscriptions... Tell me it's for the occasional software upgrades; I can accept that. But tell me the tivo subscription is to cover the cost of the "service" and I just want to argue that it means we are paying for an extended program guide.... other than that the hardware does it's thing and we already paid for that, right?
