Do you guys know why this is the case? Seems to me that they should have that option in all of their boxes. Is it because there are several actual Mfg'ers of these boxes with different build specs?

They are trying to steer everything into the DTV pipeline & that includes OTA 'Over the Air' stuff. The other boxes can have an additional AIM-21 placed on them that would pick up the local signal via OTA. I believe DTV tries to charge $55 for them but you can talk them down nicely to sometimes zero.

No it's because it's cheaper to manufacture them without the OTA tuners. Most customers don't need them, so for the few that do, they added a seperate tuner (the AM-21) that connects to the reciever via USB. Plus they charge $50.00 bucks for it......
