Hi

I had a dish network guy come in to install dish into my apartment for the indian channels. I requested for all the Hindi channel's and Gemini Tv,Teja Tv. He told me that he can get '148' but not 110. And that too for 148 there is a tree (actually dry branches) coming in between for a proper signal. He however did not even attempt to install and check it. After going through your forum i understood that i need 121 and 148 for the above mentioned channels. Can you kindly tell me wat exactly are the Azimuth and elevation's for the these 2 satellites. I am asking this because the guy mentioned on my account that there is not line of sight and so the dish ppl dont even want to come for another survey. So i would like to know wat is the Azimuth and Elevation and how can i check them ( i mean some instrument ). If i can get this info i can talk to dish ppl again to come and try installing the dish.
To summarize my question
1) What is the Azimuth and Elevation for 121 and 148? My zip code is 91311.
2) Is there an instrument which i can use to measure the angles?
3) Is there a way i can get the dish ppl to visit my apartment again to cofirm the line of sight?

Thanks in Advance
G.

The networks that you seek are available in their entirety on four different satellites. The person you talked to is on dope.

They are all available at 61.5W, 118.75W, 121W and 148W. I would shy away from 121W as it requires a goofy dish. If you want other DISH services, I would suggest a Dish500+ or a Dish1000+. If not, I'd recommend shooting for 148W as it doesn't require a special dish.

118.7W is 180.7 degrees (true) at 50.1 degrees elevation. 148W is 225 degrees (true) at 39.3 degrees elevation.

Your magnetic declination is East 13 degrees, 3 minutes, so your compass headings would be decreased by that amount.

Thanks a lot!

You ppl rock!

With the info you gave i called up dish network and as i was able to understand the terminology i was able to blast them left and right and in the mean while i found a local guy who is a subcontractor of dish network and he stepped into my apartment and told me that i can get 100% of 148 but nothing on 118. Any ways that still leaves me the with the megapack of the south asian channels, but i am only concerned abt moving of the 148 onto 118. I dunno when they r going to do this? Do you ppl have any info on this?

Thanks
G.

In our office, it is company policy if there's no LOS(line of site) that a manager goes out to the place and gives a 2nd opinion. If that wasn't done, call up dish and tell them you want a manager's opinion.

If you're in an apartment, he may of told you that as a reason not to it, when in reality you didn't have an electrical ground to ground the system.

Either way, ask for a manager to come out and check it out.

The channels are definitely moving from 121° to 118°. But the channels at 148° are safe in the mean time. Dish will probably NOT be adding any channels to that location, but the ones that are there are likely to stay at least for a while longer.

Thanks again for the info!

I actually got some subcontractor of the dish network whom i looked up on Craigslist to come down and do a survey of my location. He checked up my apartment and he actually brought the equipment into my apartment to check for the signal. He showed me that i will not be able to recieve the American channels which is 61.5 i guess. He also told me that i dont have reception of 118.7 also. But i have a 100% of 148(which will get me the Mega Pack in the south asian channels).

But i have a problem with getting it installed. The subcontractor of the dish network gave me 2 options either to take 24months contract and not pay any installation charges or pay for the equipment and stay on a month by month contract. I basically donot want to be on the contract and actually dont mind buying the equipment, however he is telling me a quote of 400$ for installing the dish and 2 recievers for 2 rooms.

When i contacted dish to get them over for installation, they told me that they r not doing any installations for 148 as they r moving them to 118.7. Dish ppl donot even want to install it even though i told them that i dont want to take a contract so that i can return the equipment when they move from 148. So is it possible for dish ppl to install it on 148 without contract?

I guess i have written a lot. I am asking so many questions because i moved into this apartment 3 days back expecting that i would get Indian channels and i have to stay here for another 12 months. So i am very anxious abt getting the dish over at my apartment.

Here are my questions once again:

1) Are the channels on 148 moving to 118.7? If yes, is there any kind of announcement on the date at which 148 is going to be decommissioned?

2) As dish n/w told me that they are not doing any installations on 148, is there any way i can get them to install with out the 24month contract so that i return the equipment when they completely move from 148?

3) How much would it generally cost for the equipment? I think from the notes in the forum, i realized that i need dish 500+ and also 2 receivers for 2 rooms and then installation. How much would it cost and can you ppl throw some light on the equipment required and where to find them at reasonable rates?

Thanks in advance
G.

Yes. The channels at 148° will be leaving that location eventually. No there has been no announcement yet. So this is a short term solution. My guess is a year or so.

2) As dish n/w told me that they are not doing any installations on 148, is there any way i can get them to install with out the 24month contract so that i return the equipment when they completely move from 148?

No. Dish Network is not doing installations for 148°. Period. Independent contractors will do it for you, but you must pay. $400 for installation and equipment is about right if it includes a receiver.

Check out the dishstore (The Dish Store - Powered by Metro25). Look at the price of receivers there. Be sure you choose the option without contracts when checking out prices.

FYI

61.5° and 148° have the same type of international programming.
110° and 119° have the American programming for the most part.
61.5° and 129° have the same HD programming for the most part.

Check out Dish Network Channel Chart (Unofficial) to see where all the channels are on Dish.

Info on satellite reciever

I think i got almost all the info abt dish and the satellites now. However can you throw some light on the dish and the receiver i need to choose?

Can you specifically tell me specifically for 148?

Thanks again
