Here is what I'm trying to figure out......

I am moving to an apartment that has Direct TV installed. I presently have Dish Network. If I have Dish Network remove Direct TV dish, they want me to sign up for a 2 year contract....which I refuse to do. If I do the work. No Contract!!

How do I go about self installing the system myself? I'm not going to replace the dish on the roof. I plan on installing the Dish Network dish on the porch roof and then tap into the direct tv installed lines before they go into the house to the 3 rooms.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

You have to do the work and BUY outright all the equipment as well.

With that in mind, a 1000.2 and 1000.4 range between $75 and $100 for the dish.

Depending on your Receivers they can Range from $100-$550 Each.

I was going to go with a Dish 500 and look around for 3 basic receivers. I might look into a dual receiver.

The present set up at the apartment, The Direct TV is at the highest point of the roof. I would need a boom truck to reach it. The cables come down the side of the house. There is a small porch that I could mount the new Dishnetwork dish then use the cables from that point?

Does the porch have an unobstructed SW view (21.5-27 degrees above level at 230-237 degrees azimuth)? If you live far enough North, this could be a problem.

I'm almost sure that I will have a good view of the sky. I have been looking around Ebay for the items I need. It would be nice to find a local Dishnetwork installer that would be willing to install everything.

If you buy anything on Ebay make sure they give you the receiver ID number so you can call Dish Network and verify the receiver is owned and not leased and no balances are on it.;)

Card number would be good also,if they include that too.:)

If you have Dish now will you be putting any additional receivers? How many receivers do you have now? 1-2 standalone dish parts would be DP or Leg Twn. 3-4 DP or Leg Quad, should get cheep because they are not used much, but will work with most receivers (DP wont work with 1000-4900 receivers) Check for line of site, quick check will the sun hit the spot directly (NO leaf filtering) in the latter afternoon(dependent on where you live). The only dish that is self installable is a 500 119-110. Get the point spot from the receiver, Make sure the mast is Plumb and point the dish using the receiver as the signal meter.

I hate having to re-commit for something that I've been a "valued customer" for years. But everything is negotiable. Having them come out to install a new dish is well worth it, and maybe you can get them to throw in a new receiver or two. Just tell them that the new place is all ready set up for DirecTv and they are tempting you with free NFL package. I switched to Dish when DirecTv could not fix a problem I had without replacing my DVR receivers and a new 2 year commitment. Now they are willing to pay my cancellation fee and give me all kinds of stuff to get me back. If you're planning on keeping the service for another 2 years anyway, you can save yourself a lot of headaches and just let them do it. You could buy all the equipment yourself, spend $100 or what ever it costs, spend hours trying to get it to work correctly, only to find out you need to put the dish up where the old one is.
