I think that you are missing the point.
DirecTV is the company offering the service. DirecTV can ALSO set the terms of them providing the service to you, and one of those terms happens to be required phone lines.
No, they can't. They aren't a government. Only a government can make that a "requirment". Now they CAN say, it won't work and you have a choice. In this case they are saying that it won't work and they are lying. I have PERSONALLY had them lie to me.
Just like when you lease or purchase a new car, the bank requires you to get full coverage. Many would argue they don't need it, but hey, don't like the terms? Then don't sign up.
You are seriously going to sit here and compare a multi-thousand dollar asset that the bank has an interest in to couple of hundred dollar TV hook-up? That car is liable because of what OTHER people could do and you could do TO IT, the sat system isn't going to break because of no phone line....unless you believe what D* had the installers tell the unsuspecting customers.
This isn't about what you want or what DirecTV wants - this is about the fact that one of the conditions of DTV service is that a "land based phone line is connected to each IRD".
Is it? Other responses in this thread say they don't, but I've been told that they do. Looks to me that Charlie Christ, the Florida Attorney General is getting ready to go back to court.
BTW, all of those techs have been fired.

NLRB is getting ready to get busy as well I see.
The "advocating lies" is Bullsh!t - an exaggeration of the facts, etc. What they did was take "do whatever it takes to get a phone line in" and convert it in to "let's lie and decieve all our customers". It could just as easily been converted in to "work a bit harder and take the extra time to install the phone jacks", but what you have is a bunch of techs who do not want to spend more time on an install for the same pay.
And from the three install sites listed in another post, not one of them states that they will install phone lines.

Of course all of this is my personal opinion as well.
