It's an interesting process. I called in the evening of 7/10. Talked to a regular CS rep and complained that I was missing AMC. At that point, she offered free Blockbuster for month. I then mentioned I was looking forward to the season premiere of Breaking Bad. At that point she said I could watch it on Amazon and offered a $20 rebate to compensate me for the season subscription. I then told her I was on my computer and found an article that Dish was offering free Roku players. She then asked if I wanted one and if so, she would transfer me to another customer service rep, presumably the Loyalty department.

The new rep simply asked if I wanted the Roku and with my confirmation said no problem and then offered a $35 credit for my troubles...I gladly accepted :-)

According to Fedex, my Roku will be delivered today!

Incidently, I've been using a Roku XDS (last gen model) for over a year now and it works great. I'm looking forward to see what the new Roku2 XD has to offer.

How did you get a tracking number, MrGST? I've been waiting 8 biz days so I called Dish. They told me they don't have tracking numbers I needed to call Roku to get a status on the pkg.

I'm a big believer of holding companies to their word. If they said they would send you and HDMI cable, then they should send you want. It was to be part of the agreement between you as the customer, and Dish as the vendor. So hold them to it. I didn't get offered an HDMI cable and after seeing others getting ones I didn't bother to call to get one. I just ordered a few from monoprice and for now use one that was for a Blue ray player that no longer works.

I've used the Roku thus far for checking out the wide variety of stuff out there. Watched an episode of something on Twit live, and watched some Disney channel with the Tron episodes, and some Amazon Prime streaming. It's been working quite well.

I realize this and I agree. Viacom did it out of spite with no regard for anyone else. I was just making a point that just because a company is giving you something free, you should still expect the same level of service as if you are buying the item. "Free" doesn't automatically mean that you need to take a back seat to what you would normally expect from the company. In Viacom's case it just shows how low they will go in the name of running a business.

YOU are the one that demanded overnight shipping, and then you said you wouldn't pay for it and had Dish pay for it.

No reason you could not wait the normal 4-5 days shipping time, unless it was a national emergency, of course!

I'm sorry you all feel like that, but as far as waiting 4-5 days more for the cable, it's already been 7 business day since it was originally order on 7-2. Second, Dish is the one that told me on 7-2 that I would receive the Roku box and the HDMI cable in 4-5 days to start with. Posted on this thread were others who had ordered after me and had already received their Roku and cable. Aside from the fact that it seem like a flip of a coin on who's Dish sent out overnight and who's they didn't. I have no problem in waiting when I'm told a correct waiting period. If on 7-2, Dish would have said delivery would be 3-4 weeks, I would have been fine. But they didn't, and I had to make 2 calls to the Loyalty Dept, both times being told that all had shipped and was on it's way. It wasn't till I called again on 7-10 that I found out that Dish messed up and no orders were placed. That when they overnighted me the Roku on their own, and I was assured the HDMI cable would be along with it. Now again, this wasn't coming from a front line CSR, but Adrian in the Loyalty dept. If at anytime Dish would have been upfront with me, and said, "Sorry, but somehow the order didn't go through, we'll take care of it right now, unfortunately it will take a few more days to reach you." OK, they would have been up front with me. As it is, the supervisor that was to track my Roku box and send me a email along with calling me, (again, the Loyalty Dept words, not me asking that this be done,) did neither.

I think if you look at the facts here a little more closely, you can see that Dish completely drop the ball on my order. Over-nighting the HDMI cable is not an outrageous demand, specially, when by this thread, it was obvious that Dish routinely over-nighted Rokus to a number of subs.

So for those who think this was petty of me, that's your right, but just because something is being given to you free, doesn't mean Dish shouldn't follow through on their word.

And I did look through all my "extra" cables to see if I had one, but HMDI cables is the only one that I had no extras at home.

Just for grins, I would like to know how many in this thread received their HDMI cable if they were told they were going to get one, and how long they waited.

Ghpr13:confused:

I think you mistook my statement. I was saying that I couldn't believe that they charged you $20 for over night for one cable, when at a whole sale store, you can get two for a penny cheaper.

cosmo_kramer,
I do have one question...Just how long is one suppose to wait??? What's the appropriate time limit? Or just because it's free, one needs to disregard what ever delivery time Dish gives you and just wait quietly until it comes?
Essentially, yes. Dish generously offered me something for free that they didn't have to do. My attitude is "I'll get it when I get it". If I purchase something and I'm promised a delivery period that passes, hell yeah, I'll be the first one to call about it. I guess we're just wired differently...no worries.

So be it. On to other topics.

It took 2 calls to finally get my Roku. It came today.
Simple to hook up and configure. It took about 4 hours of research, signing up and tinkering but I now have it also serving up my DVD collection stored on my Synology NAS server over DLNA. If this Roku natively supported DLNA it would be the icing on the cake!

How do you add dlna browsing/viewing to your Roku?

Not sure how beerbelli does it but,I installed Plex and it works pretty well. There are a couple of others but Plex seems to have the most options.

Plex does not run on my model NAS, so I had to go this route. It was a true pain in the ass, but I think I have the steps down...

1: Register here - NokNok - Sign Up
2: On the Roku, goto settings and run the update to add the noknok channel.
3: Activate the account here - Welcome to NokNok
4: Check your email and activate the account through the link.
5: Setup your DLNA server and make sure the appropriate ports are forwarded in your firewall.
6: I get sketchy on it at this point, but I think it is fairly accurate… This can also be performed on an iPhone but I don’t have one, so I went this route.
7: Download and install this (Get the Windows version) - Download - Mono
8: Download and install the dLite program for windows here - http://ws.proxy.com/installs/DLITE_0.1.25.exe
If you try and just download and install dLite first you’ll see an error about needing the above software, but the link does not work.
9: Let the dlite software find your DLNA server. When it shows up in the list, right click on it and select activate. (I think)
10: Stop and restart the noknok channel on the Roku.
11: Select the dlite option and browse to your DLNA server and enjoy.

I installed the MP4 addon as I save my movies as MP4's.

YMMV.

Thanks, I am using Serviio as my DLNA server so I was hoping for a channel that would use any DLNA server not just Plex Media Server. Do you know of any?

I must say that in a way it bothers me to see people take advantage of the generosity extended by dish in this case. I have seen a lot of people trying to get over on them to get roku's and credits when they have no need for one or never even watched the programing on the removed channels. I mean to each their own and I by no means am calling anyone out. I am just saying that companies are aware if this and I believe that it its liked at when deciding to make or not make offers in the future. Just something to think about.

On a lighter note, I am Loving my roku, enjoying a friday the 13th marathon using netflix through my roku. :-)

Happy friday the 13th everyone.

Sent from my phone using SatelliteGuys sweet app

I called last Saturday and got mine by Wednesday. Call me lucky
Same day to call, got mine yesterday. No DRAMA involved. Did not ask for confirmation/emails/tracking numbers, etc. Just showed up in the MAIL. What more could you want??? Oh I forgot, an overnight-ed HDMI cable. (NOT directed at you, Sean).

This thread is getting kind of cluttered up with roku tips/hacks.Please go to this thread for a better discussion on this subject.

Think it will make it a bit easier for everyone to get the pertinent information instead of having to cycle through so many posts.

As to your question I'm not really sure.Been reading up on google and roku forums. Not having a true dlna server is the biggest drawback of the roku. There are some solutions but, some are complicated.

Yes, on the verge on another CF thread.
