Dear Directv......

So I'm hoping to put in my order for Directv this week. I noticed that it said you can pay for a "one time" setup fee for the installer to connect the receivers to an internet connection.

My question is, how hard is this to do? I would say I'm pretty tech savvy and if I can avoid the fee and do it myself, it would be great!

So do the receivers have wireless built in them or do you have to have a straight internet connection to them?

Thanks for the help guys!

$25 to setup your boxes to the Internet if getting MRV. Tech savvy or not. I would opt to pay the $25.:)

You will find Directv isn't much better for this one. For the others ya...
I have an HD receiver hooked up to an SD TV and the PQ from the HD channels downconverted to 480i on the SD TV is much much better than the SD channels on the same TV; even though both are 480i

Tigerfan, thanks for the info. So I know you've been with Dish before. So is it a lot more complicated hooking up a Directv receiver then it is hooking a Dish box up to to internet?

Yes. If you have MRV and you connect your receiver via Ethernet to your router, that will disable MRV.

If you have the SWM/Deca MRV system installed then pay the $25. If you don't then you can hook up with the internet with wireless. MRV will work with wireless sometimes but if you want internet and MRV without their set up, a hard wired cat-5 set up is best.

Before I got the whole home dvr setup, I had a wireless Ethernet bridge connected to my bedroom HD DVR. My other two HD DVRs are connected by cat5 wire. Once the MRV was setup I started getting IP conflict issues and my network printer which is connected with cat5 too started having problems too. After trying some different things I unplugged the wireless bridge from the bedroom HD DVR and all my issues went away. The two cat5 connected HD DVRs are still connected without issues. So I can attest that the MRV setup doesn't play nice with wireless bridges.

This isn't quite accurate.

On the H/HR24 if you plug a cable into the Ethernet interface it disables the internal DECA adapter. (after a reboot / it decides which network adapter to use on bootup) So if you connect one receiver via Ethernet, you need to connect them all via Ethernet unless you have the separate DECA adapter to bridge the DECA network to your home LAN.

Once MRV is enabled on your account you can use Ethernet or DECA, but DirecTV will only support DECA if you run into problems and require a service visit.
