Recording PPV Titles To Your DVR

"Effective April 15, 2008, DVR recordings of PPV movies will be available for 24 hours of unlimited viewing after purchase. Major movie studios have required that satellite and cable providers alike may no longer allow their customers to view these recordings for longer than 24 hours. During the 24 hour viewing period, you will continue to enjoy all of your DVR features such as pause and rewind."

Looks like everyone else will get this too...it's so big that it's landed on the Dish-focused News Monitor this morning.
 
This is crap....I will never order another PPV movie. Why would I pay the same amount for a movie that I can only watch for 24 hours when I can go to any local video store and rent it for a week? D* and the MPAA have really screwed up!
 
No suprise, but good that they did the recording to the dvr to let customers know.

It came out in mid-march that this was coming. I belive them when they say it is the studios, surely they would not want to do this if their hand wasn't being turned.

If they start doing that,then I guess I'll buy a DVD recorder, and Drop DVR service, because there would be no point to DVR then.

The day they start this on Dish is the day I stop ordering PPV. And I will never order another one. HBO starts this crap, I drop them and never re-subscribe. I will patronize my local video store instead. Plus, I will send letters to Dish and HBO letting them know the reason for my choices, and why they will no longer be getting my dollars. Enough people do that, policies might change. Nothing will change if people don't act.

They screwed up by letting it happen. If they knew this was going to happen why didn't they do more about it?

Tyralak - This is national. I sent an email complaining about it to D* and they state that this is being required by every provider including cable.

If HBO or any other premium channel does this I will drop them also. I already frequent my local video store because the price of a movie ticket is outrageous so keep it up MPAA and you will continue to get less of my money!

Thanks for writing.

Beginning April 15, 2008 DIRECTV will be introducing new guidelines for DVR Pay Per View recordings. As you may know already, movies purchased and recorded to DVR receivers will be automatically deleted after 24 hours. This is an industry-wide change mandated by movie studios and this policy change is being implemented by all cable and satellite television providers.

The 24 hour viewing period begins as soon as the movie is purchased, so if you order a movie at 8:00 PM on Friday and record it on to your DVR, you'll have until 8:00 PM Saturday to watch it.

This new rule applies to Pay Per View movies only, regular programming and other Pay Per View purchases (sports, events and adult programming) will not be affected.
 
This annoys me and lately DirecTV has been frustrating me with their new policies. The new HD programming is great but in the last 2 months, the cost of my DirecTV service has gone up along with being billed extra for channels the used to be included with my HD package with Total Choice Premier. Now this new 24 expiration PPV policy.

I used to be a regular customer of PPV movies and events. Now, because of this new policy I don't think I will purchasing anymore PPV purchases for here on out. I think more DTV customers should protest this new policy by not purchasing PPV movies and events so that DTV's revenue from PPV purchases drops considerably.

This totally diminishes the purpose of a DVR!

I realize that, however, the distribution companies have significant clout. They lose enough revenue, and the lawsuits start flying.
 
I dont like it either but what do yo think D can do about it . If dish and cable have to do this because of the movie distributers it is out of their hand. Now if everyone quit using ppv then maybe that will change.

Not near as much as "THE INDUSTRY". And screw lawsuits; the end result is we will still not get what WE want, but we will get much higher fees passed down to pay for all the court costs.

The EFF is on it too. Money is king. Enough customers vote with their dollars, things will change. It already has in the music industry. The music industry is abandoning "DRM" for music downloads and CDs.

There's really no point in waiting to express your views. They'll likely have much less impact after the fact.

That being said, there isn't much the distributors can do if the programmers are making these demands.
