D* CSR offered to upgrade my R15 to an HR-2X. Free. But then I lose the coax output I was using to distribute signal to other SD tv's in the house.
So that forces me to upgrade all other tv's to HD and even then how could I run HDMI or component cables all over the house?

Why aren't they replacing R15's with other R15's?

Just buy a RF modulator from "The Shack" or BB, less then $20. Connect it to the HR2X's video/audio output and you're set to go.

If you have an old vcr laying around, and who doesn't, you can use it as an rf modulator.

(of course, you don't tell us where you're at &/or what locals you get, but...)
Do you live in a 2-dish local market, where they are in the process of transitioning them to MPEG4? If so, R-15/16 will NOT eventually work for local channels, as they can ONLY be received w/MPEG4 receivers. They are doing this in ALL 2-dish markets as these other DVR's/receivers bite the dust, so it's NOT only you that it's happening to. I have clients with these units that have broken & they are automatically being sent HR2x units as replacements, as we are one of these markets.

Is D* going to charge you the $10 HD fee when they do this? If not, then you don't really have much to complain about - you're actually getting a much BETTER DVR & you'll be ready for HD when you DO get an HD set! Just get the simple fix everyone has already mentioned & you're ready to go.

I agree if the OP sees a $10. increase on their DirecTV bill they will realize why they received this offer. They also must be in a MPEG4 locals area so it would be interesting to see if they get charged $10. more and have SD.

THANKS for idea on usung old VCR--we do have!

We live in 2-dish locals area.

so--will there be another or higher monthly fee for this HD DVR (HR-2X) replacement of my R15?

I already have one HR 20 for the HD tv we have in the family room. The R 15 feeds other SD tv's throughout the house.
