In regards to the new season of MLB Extra Innings, I know I should be grateful for being a DirecTV subscriber and also a subscriber of MLB Extra Innings since the other providers still do not offer the package, however, I must say I am disappointed that DirecTV has renewed the package, paying substantially more in rights fee than before, comparing the package they offer with that of MLB.TV, and still DirecTV will not offer any off-the-air broacasts within the package. The current schedule still only offers those broadcasts made available on regional sports networks. I do not know how they can compare themselves with that of MLB.TV in terms of the games offered in the package. Granted the picture quality is much better on television than on the computer screen, and DirecTV does offer HD broadcasts, but without the off-the-air broadcasts, several games per week will be unavailable, especially for those fans of such teams as the Phillies, Padres, and Blue Jays. I was hoping with the advent of a new contract, that perhaps the DirecTV package would mirror the MLB.TV package in content since there are many more dollars changing hands. Even if DirecTV is unable to offer the feeds of Comcast Philadelphia or Channel 4 Padres due to screwy restrictions, if they were able to carry all of the available off-the-air feeds (all of which are offered in the local markets DirecTV serves via local-into-local), the games not available through Comcast Philly or Ch. 4 Padres would still most likely be available in the package. But apparently MLB must be the one that is not allowing this to happen - I can't imagine why DirecTV would not allow this to happen. So I guess it's seven more years of only a partial package. Any thoughts on the subject?

The comments about Direct not including off the air broadcasts may not be entirely true. I was watching the Pads vs Giants today and the broadcasters mentioned that Thursday's game would not be on FSN BA. Being a big Pads fan, I was dissapointed that I would miss that game.

However on my guide and online at Direct, I see that Thursday game is indeed scheduled to be shown on channel 742:

Checking the Giants website:

http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=sf

Checking the Pads website:

http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=sd

I see that the only television for the game is KTVU in Frisco, an ota station or Channel 4 in San Diego, which originates from Cox Cable. So then how is the game being broadcast as part of the MLBEI?

Maybe there will be some additional access to games. I guess we'll just have to wait till Thursday for some answers.

The point about Thursday's Padres-Giants game is intriguing. However, I would bet that either this is a mistake in scheduling by DirecTV and this game will not be shown in the Extra Innings package, or the game will be simulcast on an RSN somewhere outside of the immediate San Francisco area, and, therefore, DirecTV will make it available. However, I'm not sure I can even go with my own logic. Case in point: Tonight, Tuesday, the Rangers and Angels are playing and being shown on off-the-air stations in each respective market (KCOP in Los Angeles and My27 in the Dallas area). The Rangers feed is also being simulcast on FSN Southwest and is on channel 667 on DirecTV. However, this channel is blacked out nationally (at least in my area in New England) and this feed is not available in the Extra Innings package. In fact, if you tune to the MLB Mix Channel, the game is listed but with a caption saying "Game may be available locally". I don't understand this one bit, and as I'm sure the wonderful reps at DirecTV will have no clue, I will not bother to call and ask. If Thursday's Padres-Giants game is shown via an off-the-air feed then I am completely baffled with how the schedule is determined.

I watched the Padres-Giants game through the MLB EI package yesterday afternoon. Zito is starting off just as bad as he played for Oakland last year. Why you would sign him for a seven year deal is beyond me.

Just checked DirecTV's web site and they have now pulled the Padres-Giants game off of their Thursday Extra Innings schedule. This answers the question as to whether they will show off-the-air broadcasts (no way!) and truly diminishes the value of the package overall, considering MLB.TV shows off-the-air telecasts, and both NBA League Pass and NHL Center Ice show off-the-air telecasts. Mind you that I am happy to be able to see out of market games on my television, but I feel short changed because not all games are available.
