Apparently I missed this and it was announced by a moderator we all know and love at AVS last month.

I did not hear about this either, according to most, this is an upgrade !

Do you have anything from D* stating this or is it just speculation at this point ?

It beats the 1260 x 1080 (or whatever) they are sending the national mpeg 2 channels at. :D

Just taking a look kat my DirecTV MPEG4 locals they still look as good as OTA, however in saying this the stations here have sub carriers whic are not carried by DirecTV.

It does look at good as OTA. (But again my local stations have subchannels and I have no way of measuring what the local station is pumping out).

Some folks fail to understand that a MAJORITY of what you see in HD was SHOT in 1440 x 1080.

How did your Fios install go today Verbano?

That is one reason you never see me posting about how excited I am that D* is adding more HD. I have been with them since 1996, just for lack of a better option. We have Charter cable here, you see. :(

ANYONE who belives that D* is interested in QUALITY is clearly NOT paying attention. As long as that is so I will not feel the least bit bad for requesting every free bit of service and equipment I can. When a blind mice such as myself can see the difference on a 720p plasma, with the macroblocking and fuzzy edges...I would hate to have a 1080p panel and try to watch it...

Sadly, its is the only option available. There is no better option available here. :(

BTW my contact says its not true and Earls contact (which is better then mine) also says its not true.

Thats good ...
I still have not seen where D* came out and supposivly said that ....
But thats OK, I guess it's one persons opinion, just like mine, it's no better than someone elses opinion.

I am sure in some areas the HD quality could be worse, perhaps they are using Generation 1 MPEG4 encoders or something.

I will say it again, my locals from DirecTV in MPEG4 look JUST AS GOOD as OTA

Some people just look at the numbers and pass judgement just because of that. The sad part is, you could probably show those people a pristine, untouched HD pic, but tell them it is downrezzed and most of them would immediately tell you how crappy it looks.

I like the people bitching about FOOD HD and HGTV HD because dish has it at 1440 x 1080. I find this funny is because all shows on these channels are SHOT in 1440 x 1080.

If they are shot and shown in 1440 x 1080 are they really being downresed?

I do not think it is a 1440x1080i from source to customer TV. It goes through so many iteration of up/down resizing that when it gets to the customer TV is not the same.

Shot in 1440x1080 ----> FOODTV takes it and ups it to 1920x1080i ----> Dish takes and downs it to 1440x1080i ----> my Tv or your tv depending on native resolution takes it and either ups it at 1080i or downs it to 720p. Of course this also depends how the STB is setup and I just assume that it is setup at native resolution. This is why I am getting to like the BR or HD DVD solution---> one convertion to my TV is all I need...

I don't know??They looked a lot better then I thought they were going to.I can't complain about E* HD picture quality,Maybe just TNT stinks.YESHD and SNYHD on D* are the only 2 channels in the D* HD line up that look better then ALL the channels in the E* HD line up.I've been compairing for the last 3 1/2 weeks myself. Lets just say I'm not dropping either D* or E* just yet !!

I fell prey to the the people running around saying how good HDLIL looked and D*'s 100 HD channels this year and cancelled it. D* is to upgrade my equipment tommorrow. I wish I had read this The M8B speaks out on D* & MPEG4 LIL HD. - AVS Forum earlier.
I still haven't seen where someone has posted the actual information that shows this is happening. All I've seen is someone saying they've seen the info but can't post it.

:haha :haha :haha

Three years now of complaining about D*TV high def, yet there he is...still with them. I'm with you Scott - OTA and D*TV locals are equal, and have been since day one.

I just got an e-mail last month telling me FIOS will be in the area in 2012. Whoopee...besides, the 2 people I know who do have it (in another state) have said that besides their horrible install experience, they noticed it goes down periodically and has some signal stability issues as well. "It's not the HD savior everyone thinks it is" one of them told me.

By the way, if you really want to see a downrezzed crappy HD signal, come here to my 2 remaining neighbors who are about to leave Comcrap - downright ugly Hd - its virtually SD - and that's with their latest HD receiver. The explanation they got was that "the infrastructure for HD is still not complete to assure a consistent high quality viewing experience". They'd be happy with one solid week of good HD.
