Here's my situation. I just upgraded to HD+DVR and the HR20 had audio issues on HD channels. I got a replacement reciever, a -700 model unlike the -100 initially. I don't care about the difference, so that's not the issue. So, I got it up and running and lo-and-behold the audio issue is gone. YAY! Problem fixed. Well, I wasn't getting a signal through my HDMI, so I had it up through component. After making sure it all worked, I unhooked it to check the HDMI and noticed one of the connectors was missing. So no HDMI on this unit, ever. I can live with running through component, but I noticed a better picture in HDMI mode, especially at 1080i.

Would it be worth sending in for another unit? What are ya'lls preferences on connections? HDMI or component for HD?? I have enough inputs, so it's really not a problem, just me being OCD :)! I am concerned about new HD programming coming out being protected, HDCP, so will that be an issue if I am not running through HDMI?

Well, I'll await your responses.
Thanks for the input!

Let me get this straight...you got an HR20-700 and it didn't have an HDMI output on it? Only component? Didn't think there were models without HDMI...

I prefer HDMI since it carries audio as well, but when running through a Home Theater system, the sound is split off anyway. If you are OCD, then HDMI would be the best bet since it is only one cable as opposed to three ;) But either way, you will get a quality HD signal (assuming the cables are in good shape/no shorts). This is just my opinion, and is not based on any scientific evidence, so take it with a grain of salt... :)

:welcome to Satelliteguys Drake!!

I think he means one of the pins...not sure.

Thank you ke4est! To atp, I do have the HDMI, but as ke4 said it is one of the gold pins/connectors. I took a flashlight to it to see what the deal was, and at first it looked like it was just bent, but on further investigation I noticed it was sheared off, so no signal.

After watching for a bit I noticed that 720p looks pretty good on the component, but 1080i is blah. I like the 1080 coming from my upconvert DVD player, and the other HR20 looked better on hdmi 1080 than component.

What are ya'lls preferences on connections? HDMI or component for HD??

Absolutely HDMI. Even on my lowly 720p TV I see a very noticeable degradation using component. Don't settle for faulty unit. Make them give you a replacement.

Depends on the TV, but go HDMI for sure, and get another box to enjoy it. For me it's a BIG difference.

Won't D* simply send you a replacement HR20???

Yes. I called them and they are sending yet another replacement. Mainly I wanted to know what other people were using as an output, whether HDMI or component. I have determined that I like HDMI better, especially at 1080i. The component just doesn't cut it.
