Ive been requested to do another FTA install, yet this time with equipment customer already has on site. Ive done previous installs with rotors and 30" dish/Invacom LNBF's

However, this customer is wanting me to use his existing DirecTV AU9-SL3 and Dish 300 w/ a legacy dual. He has it in his mind I can repoint these for FTA. He is using a ViewSat UltraLite rcvr.

I explained the positioning of the satellites and the differences in technology, and even though that yes you can get some programming off these dishes, it wont be much. I told him that he would need at least a 30" dish and proper LNB, possibly a rotor to take advantage of all the offerings of FTA.

He got back to me just recently and said he spoke to another installer that told him he could utilize his existing AU9 and with that alone could get him over 600 channels of prime programming. Why does this sound fishy to me?

Sounds like he's just wanting to steal programming. If I were an installer I wouldn't want to be
working for him.

I think the other installer might be better described as an accomplice from a legal perspective. :)

NASA TV, AngelOne, a radio station or two, and a double handful of info channels is not "600 channels of prime programming" obviously.

The problem is stealing Dish is too easy, a lot of people are doing it, people selling hardware are calling it "free to air" and essentially it is similar to downloading music or movies illegally via P2P. Just because it is easy doesn't make it legal or right.

All you can do is try to help them understand that what they're talking about is stealing, but there is plenty of legally available programming. Maybe not 600 prime channels, but a lot of interesting stuff anyway. :)
