Is this possible, I'm doubtful but wanted to ask just for curiosity? This was a question posed on PVR Explorer on Yahoo.
I have read somewhere, anecdotally, that you can copy the disharc folders from the old EHD to a new EHD that has been formatted by the new receiver on the new account using linux of course and these files can then be played on the new receiver.

No it is not considered hacking since no encryption is being broken. And yes, you can definitely copy programs or the whole DishArc folder from one EHD to another using linux. I did it when one of the 500GB partitions on my WD15EARS crumped. The partitions on the EHD are all formatted with the ext3 file system.

I would think copying a file from one account and adding it to another account would be some form of a hack or at least stealing of service.

Is that what whatchel1 was suggesting? Files copied from one EHD to another will only play back on receivers on the same account. If you give files from your receiver to somebody else, or for that matter your whole EHD, they won't be able to play the programs at all.

OP has this as part of his thread. I have no problem with copying on a new EHD as long as it is part of the same account. I may be wrong, but this reads like he's trying to get around the encryption.
I guess it does. I glossed over the "new account" part. If it truly is a new account, then no, it won't work. Otherwise, it will.

As did I. :( And now I've read the posts over on Yahoo, and I see a "ysub99" was asking the same thing in almost the same language. Is that you whatchel1?

No, I just copied what was said and posted it. He says he has a new acct. He also said that he had an ext HDD from what I assumed was an account he previously had with dish. So not really thinking it is hacking but someone returning after having left for a while.

An EHD is tied to the account the recording on. You can move the EHD to different acceptable receivers on the same account, but not one on another account even if both are to the same person.
I know that they question asked was could the guy take the stuff off his old HDD from his old acct and put it on a new hard drive on his new acct. using a Linux computer.

How? Its takes more than making a copy to consider it circumvention of the DRM. The whole purpose of the DRM is to attempt to control what you can/can't do with the media. If it can't be used on another account, as TheKrell has pointed out, the DRM hasn't been circumvented.

whatchel, I have no doubt that the files could be copied from one EHD to another regardless of account ownership, but they won't be playable on the other account due to the encryption.

What happened to regular software updates?
