How to copy Dish DVR files via USB
This does Not violate DRM protection.
Unknown whether you can format a drive on 1 DVR then copy files recorded on another.
Works fine copying between drives formatted by same DVR.
> Format the destination drive by a Dish DVR
> build a spreadsheet from the origin drive Dish list of events
> one event / row, oldest -> newest descending order
> On a Linux system, connect & mount Dish origin drive
> drive will show a name as a 32 hex character string
> root directory is "DishArc"
> folders underneath are each recorded DVR event
> names are NOT to be changed (don't know why yet)
> names Seem to be in a date derived hex value
> names Seem to be when event was initially recorded
> names are listed in chronological order, oldest -> newest
> open a root terminal
> get into "DishArc" folder (use copy / paste on hex drive name)
> change Only "DishArc" permissions to user read/write (open as root)
> do a "ls > /tmp/List_xxx.txt" (may have to open as root to move/delete)
> go to /tmp and copy List_xxx.txt to a flash drive (Windows formatted works fine)
> open, copy / paste List on spreadsheet system, oldest at top
> -- you now have an event -> folder name list
> (take hex name, convert to dec/4096 & format as date for some idea of name method)
> Connect & mount Dish destination drive
> copy folders, origin -> destination using List as name guide
> slow systems may require copy in / out of system volume
