I currently own a Expressvu 5900 PVR receiver (and pay my bill, i'm not using any trick with my receiver).

I'm looking to buy a second receiver with PVR capability BUT i want a simpler way of dumping my records without opening the receiver each time.

So, the Coolsat 7000 PVR look to fit my requirements BUT it is as good as my 5900?

Quality of the picture?
Quality of the sound?
Stable?
Lost frame?

Thanks again for your help on the subject,

coolsat 7000 (or any other FTA recevier) is not going to get you any picture on Belll or dish, etc legally

Ok...

I was under the assumation that because this model do have a card reader, I would be able to use one of my two card (one that is mostly un-used on a 3100 receiver) to use the Coolsat as a receiver legally...

Look like I would need to buy a second 5900 and install a HD case...=( The Coolsat was a nicer option because:

1. Let me use any HD, not only the hardcoded model.
2. Longer EPG
3. Easier access to HD.

So even with the card reader, I will not be able to use the Coolsat to receiver Bell signal?

Unfortunately due to copy protection supporters there is no easy way to transfer what you record to a computer, if someone transfers their recorded content to a computer, they can do whatever they want with it.

I am not saying copy protection is a bad thing, but it does limit what you can do with what you own or have payed to access.

EDIT - The card slot might be compatible with your subscription encryption type, it might not, but your provider will not activate or issue a card for it. They only issue cards for their receivers and they are locked to the receiver they are issued to.

Someday maybe the FCC (I don't think they have as much control over satellite as they do for terrestrial broadcasts and cable ) will force Satellite companies to allow usage of some type of device like "CableCARD" for reception in a subscribers receiver.

No, none of the major subscription satellite TV services in North America *
can be received on any user-supplied receiver.
All such subscription cards work only in the company-supplied receivers.

* Dish Network, DirecTV, Bell Express Vu, StarChoice, GlobeCast

Thanks for all the help...=)

So, plan B =)

But just for the fun of it, how do Coolsat compare to my supplied receiver quality wise? it is equivalent or picture quality is less good?

what's plan B??

Well on the couple unencrypted channels on Bell (mainly channel 198) the picture looks the same. But I really can't compare since FTA channels can look really good or really crappy depending on how much bandwidth they use

Plan B is to do not buy a Coolsat and buy a other Expressvu 5900 and get a removable HD case for it...And keep using a small EPG...=(

Until ExpressVu gets a longer EPG sadly the 44hr is the max. I wish they would get a 9day EPG like Dish can do :)
