Hi,

I have a directv reciever that is about 6 months old that I quit using about 2 months into my contract because it was replaced with a tivo box.

My question is if I call directv and activate that recever for a 3rd tv (I have 2 currently), will I have to sign a year contract with it?

To my understanding in the past. If you activate a new receiver then they will ask for a new 1 year commitment. But as far as an old receiver you had activted before, then no new commitment. Call and ask.

Erm, sortsol.

If you just 'deactivated' that IRD then you'd be fine just calling up and requested it be readded to your account. No commit needed at all.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the committment in regards to programming and not hardware?

You get a commitment for programming if you accept any 'special' offers such as $5 / $10 off a month your TC/TCPremier for 6 months, free locals for 6 months / etc. (This doesn't include the Free Showtime you're offered sometimes or the 3 free months of Starz that is currently there.)

Also, there is a hardware commitment if you buy new hardware since (usually) when you enter a store and buy an IRD they have a contract for you to sign that you agree to keep your IRD connected to an account with at least TC for a years time. (Note, you could buy a new box, hook it up, and disconnect it for a later time and still be okay. The commit is on the account, not the box.)

I recently re-activated a older RCA DRD222RD that I had de-activated months before with no problems. The tech did say that sometimes re-activating of a used receiver requires a new Access Card, I guess this is by a case by case basis, or how long the receiver has been de-activated......
