My dad is German and is looking for german channels so it looks like dish is the only option. But I don't want to be in a contract. Is there a way to sign up now a days with no contract? Buy my own equipment is fine. Can used equipment be locked out for non payment or does just the card stop working? Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

You can purchase your own equipment to avoid the contract, there may be an activation charge, but you would need the 118.7 orbital location in addition to your arc. Seeing that you are from FL, I am guessing you would need EA and a 118.7 wingdish.

The dish isn't the problem is the STB, I know its only mpeg 4 equipment which would leave the cutoff with what STB? Also if I buy a used one from craigs or eBay, could they be on a blacklist due to non payment or is that only the cards?

A correction and some clarification.
DISH has two orbital locations. Your locals are on both if he lives where you do. You will want the Western location because that is the only direction where the German channels are, otherwise if install the Eastern location you will have two dishes.

I believe you can get the equipment from DISH without a contract if you forego the new customer discounts, and if so I highly recommend that over buying all the equipment. If you buy your equipment and have no contract you won't get the new customer discounts anyway. There are no monthly/fee savings in buying your own equipment. Contact a DIRT member here they can give the best way to do what you want.

Yes used equipment is always locked out if there is a balance unless it gets paid off. If you have a receiver already that can still be used with DISH (Some can no longer be activated) you can use it.

After installing and seeing the signal strengths on my 1000 plus dish. I would certainly try and go Western arc.
The 1000 plus is a little big , but well worth it.
I only paid $80 for the complete used, (but excellent condition ) dish. But they do go for around $130 new
After seeing the HD and SD PQ differences between arcs the SD is quite a bit better on Eastern arc,, but HD I can't say I saw a difference.
But my western arc experience was breif, I'm only now using the 61.5,72,and 118.
But if simple and reliability is a concern, I would go with a 211k or Z.
You can buy either one for around $90 brand new.
So I wouldn't bother with used.
It's too risky vs the new cost of one.

They are simple to hook up, and they are never picky with check switch and other lnb and multiswitch issues.

The Hoppers I've noticed can be very picky when it comes to ports, nodes and multiswitch connections.

I can't see recommending buying equipment and spending likely $250 to $300 when the whole idea is he wants to and is expecting to stop service when his father realizes he can't operate the receiver. I would think first choice would be no contract using equipment for nothing from DISH if that is still an option.

Just because the WA numbers are higher than EA, doesn't mean the signal strength is higher. They use different scales.
Does my super buddy use a different scale?
Because according to that the signal quality is better across the board compared to EA.

The EA is all 8PSK transponders which are lower numbers because of the way the transmission is encoded. WA is only partially 8PSK which will show similar numbers to the EA numbers. The rest of the transponders on 110 and 119 are much higher signal levels because they're not 8PSK.

I thought all western arc is now 8PSK?

I added this link just as you were posting the question:

According to "The List"
The 110 is 8PSK

If all of the WA has been converted to 8PSK then the difference would be between MPEG2 and MPEG4. I'm not sure of the current status but I do know that the signals are not measured the same.

Well Eastern Arc may have a lower accepted range for activation according to Dish than western arc.
But my guess is overall it's a weaker arc.
Which is why we experienced more rain fade when we switched over years ago.
I've also seen many others report Western arc with exception the 129 to be less rain fade prone.
