Constant Picture/sound Breakup

I would appreciate some help as I sooo wish to remain with V* as the picture and sound quality is (for me, viewing on my TV) very good, when it works! I have been a loyal customer since buying my JVC 48" Widescreen rear projector (thus the reason for getting V* since E* did not seem interested in HD programming); anyhow, since my install about 2mths ago we have had intermittent sound/picture breakup making viewing impossible. (There is not a cloud in the sky!) Have had 3 service calls where the contractor did not turn up, though to be honest, and living in South Georgia can understand that they have been busy with the recent storms, but pressure from the rest of the family is making it difficult to keep our service. We seem to be unable to get OTA so the 'fixes' I read about in the forums do not seem to work, I have called and sent a message to V* CSR, but maybe someone else can help. (All software is up to date).

expatvoomer,

given the severaty of your problems, suggest you to get in contact with Wilt Hildenbrand at VOOM ("Wilt Hildenbrand" wilth@optonline.net.).

If you are getting breakups, most likely there is something wrong with your dish alignment or LNB depending on how strong is your signal. The problem could also be a bad cable or diplexor. It really depends on your setup.

Since you are not getting OTA channels, this is another problem. I will strongly suggest you to get in contact with Wilt and explain all these problems. The installer should have never left you this way. This is not the way the system is supposed to be.

By the way, go to a channel that pixelates or drop the signal and go to the system settings and post here your satellite signal strength. What type of setup do you have? One line to your house or two lines? Was the antenna installed? what type?

Sean, thanks for the reply. I have 2 STB's running through existing cable that was left from my E* install using Winegard DP3020 combiner. With all fairness to the installer, the satellite reception was fine though he did hand me the box with the OTA antenna and said something like you are too far for OTA reception but are welcome to put it up myself, which I did! It was not until later that the probs started, instead of getting channel 261 (Starz HD) I get Bravo HD, 262 I get an upgrade message (I have Va Va Voom), 301 (ESPN HD) I get TMC and of course the picture/sound breakups. Its doing it right now, so I guess its a DVD again tonight! Sometimes it clears up around 8pm or so. I am not mad at V*, I am a Copier Tech myself so am aware of the weird kinds of problems that can happen, just want to get it resolved and keep the wife happy. Oh, my signal strength is around 98 but drops to below 40 every second or so, I don't think it is wind fade and the dish is on the side of the roof so no trees.

Sean I forgot to add, as I can hear your thoughts when I said that I put the OTA antenna up myself that it is not connected to the combiner, but direct into my TV using a separate cable, at least we can pick up something. Cannot remember what the antenna is but I know its not a Stealth. My locals are around 50 miles away.

Ilya,
thanks for the tip, should have read those threads properly! I bypassed the combiner on one of the lines from the dish to see if that would fix the mixed up channels, but alas! But now Ive reconnected, the picture breakups have stopped! I will pass the polarity switching prob on to the contractor when he comes. Thanks.

Could be a loose contact somewhere...

Let us know what happens. Since you have a stealth antenna, you can ask VOOM for an upgrade antenna with a range of 65 miles so that you can get your local. If you already have a service call, have the local installer speak to VOOM to get an upgraded antenna approved.

Update on my problem: I removed the Winegard diplexer entirely, the connections did not appear to be loose as I had to use a wrench. This has stopped the sound and picture breakups (I have 2 STB's and both were doing it); but did not cure the channel mix up with 1 STB. So, after reading through various threads I switched cables coming from the LNB and that cured that channel mix up problem! (Both STB's are working correctly now). All I have left to do is figure out my OTA problem. If I already had 2 locals mapped (with channel info on the guide) does this mean that I should get them when I scan for channels? CSR say not necessarily! Antennaweb does not list them as digital but other websites do, though with much less power than analog. Do I have PSIP problem or is analog overriding digital. I have a fair signal coming direct to my TV which is better than nothing.

Check with your local stations if these two stations are transmitting digitally in your area and at what power strength. Best thing is to speak to the local engineer. The fact that the channels are mapped is good since they are there waiting for a signal.
