I had Comcast. I now have Dish Network and would not go back.
The selection of HD is better than Comcast was back in October '08. The Dish DVR is so much better there is no contest. The Dish package saves me $30 per month.
I still have Comcast for my internet and kept basic cable that gives me HD locals WLVI (WB), WSBK, PBS. My internet would have gone up $15 dollars or I could keep the basic cable at the same price so I did. Advantage to keeping Comcast would have been Speed HD, MLB Network and full time NESN HD. Had I known (Or thought to ask) about MLB Network never going to happen and NESN not being full time HD I may have stayed with Comcast to be honest with you.
I'm happy with Dish overall. With any provider you will find shortcomings and I'm optimistic that my few wants will come in a year or so. I can wait.

I have Comcast through condo assoc rules and Dish by my own volition. Hands down, both SD and HD picture quality are better on Dish. The Comcast DVR seems to be crap, but I do not use it much. With two tuners and so much storage room on the 722, I rarely watch Comcast.

I was with DISH for years until about 2 years ago I switched to COMCAST - I think the HD PQ was probably about the same myself; Comcast does NOT require a contract. I am NOW set upp to return to DISH - I will miss Comcast's ON DEMAND and Encore BUT will not miss the monthly price of my package, which just went up another $5 and even though they give me a $10 discount....it has just become WAY too expensive for a senior on a fixed income - TOO MUCH!
With my new DISH programming I won't be getting as much BUT will be getting really more than I even need for $25 less a month than I am paying Comcast - - - look forward to having that "extra" money.

Cable subscribers in our area that have Comcast tried to get the Peoria, IL city council to not renew their cable contract with Comcast because of the huge rate hikes and channel removals from when they took over for AT&T. E* and D* installers in the area were incredibly busy because of the way Comcast treated their customers here.

My HD viewing is done on a 78" screen with a Panasonic front projector.
The system is definitely better than when it was part of Time Warner.
For me; I have all the HD channels I need. (Well I would take GAC in HD if I had a way to get it from the HD-HDVR to a computer and keep the HD and the digital audio signal) I also enjoy not having to have a box, and the cost of it, for each of the other 3 tv's.

Precisely. My area has had HSI through Road Runner for over a decade, I jumped on Verizon DSL when it became available ~ 5 years ago. But, now it seems Verizon doesn't want to do an upgrade from 1.5 Mbps down, let alone bring us FIOS. Just seems like they don't care to compete with TW in my area.
Run as far, far away as you can from Dish Network. As soon as you make the transition to HD be prepared to be hit with a boatload of fees and be lied to about which channels you will/won't get.
I would go with Comcast, hands down.

Don't forget about the hidden fee's they don't advertise on their website or commercials. Dish is by far more expensive than DirecTV.

direct need 2 tv's phone or not $5 extra need local $5 alredy in your price drop locals and its still more then dish....

I can only speak for my experience with Dish, I think their HD quality is average; their hd dvr's seem to be better than Direct tv and miles ahead of *most* of the cable company offerings. (I've only seen the motorola hd dvr, don't remember the model, it has a much smaller hard drive and less features than the 622/722).
Here's what I would try and do: find someone who has comcast hd service, get a look see for yourself; you're the best judge of pq and what features their dvr's have, what you can live with and get by without. Talk to Comcast or go online and see what it will cost you for the install; since you're gonna get the internet service you might get a good deal on the installation (I don't have Comcast in our area, but when I've checked their install charges in the Houston area, seems like it would cost ~$150--200 for the install. if you can get it cheap enough you could consider giving them a try if you don't hafta sign a contract). Seems like they used to advertise free installs several times a year (weekend sale, one week sale, etc), I haven't noticed them running these ads the last year or so. I'm happy with Dish, their 622 is a stable dvr; of course you can never have too much hd! I would guess with Dish you'd have a 2 year commitment in order to get the hd upgrade?

Dish is the only DVR I've ever used. From a usabilty standpoint, it's solidly OK. It could get cumbersome if you are a massive recorder, though. The one thing I think it lacks is decent handling of massive amounts of recordings.

But...I'll also say "don't kill yourself trying to decide". Ultimately, Dish, DirecTV, and Comcast all suck in their own ways. None of them are great companies.
The problem with Cable (no matter the provider) is that the quality will depend on where you live. Some areas might have excellent quality, but others are crap.
Unfortunately I live in one of the crap areas (Comcast, formerly Adelphia).

Wow, you must be one of the only people from the Philly area who sings Comcast's praises. As I said before I live just outside the City and I'll never give them any of my money. Just had my neighbor and my friend give them up, too. Of course they went with DirecTV not Dish, but they are now getting more channels, and what they perceive to be better HD for a lot less than what Comcast was offering.
