Why all the buzz about broadband?
“If a community is to stay competitive and to grow we need to become knowledgeable of the technology. With the Internet the world seems to becoming smaller and smaller,” said Conrad Feldt, project coordinator for the Cohasset Get Broadband Initiative and owner of Itasca Computer Resources. “By people coming to the Technology Fair we are hoping people can see some of the things that can be done.”
In order to teach the local residents about not only the World Wide Web, but about things like parent portals, secure and automated backup, online banking and more the Cohasset Get Broadband initiative is sponsoring a Technology Fair on Monday, Oct. 10 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Cohasset Community Center.
The city of Cohasset is one of several communities in the state of Minnesota participating in the Blandin Foundation Get Broadband Public Policy Initiative. Feldt explained that although the city of Cohasset and Grand Rapids are geographically very close, the Blandin Foundation surveyed the separate communities and determined that separate committees would be the best way to accomplish the goal of providing more information about broadband technology which, in turn, would increase demand for the product and potentially bring in more providers at more reasonable costs to area residents.
In addition to funding from the Blandin Foundation, the project has received funding from the Cohasset Economic Development Authority, cash and in-kind contributions from two local Internet service providers.
“This is open to everyone. We are encouraging residents and businesses both to attend. We feel there is something for everyone. We have several sessions planned in addition to many exhibitors. In these sessions demonstrations will be given on the use of the Internet. Though many of these same things can be done on a slower Internet speed, the faster the Internet, the more enjoyable and easier it is,” said Feldt.
While there are scheduled informative sessions throughout the day, Internet service providers will be available to answer questions at any time.
There is a special drawing for those who bring someone to the fair who has not yet experienced high speed Internet. There also will be other door prizes along with snacks served throughout the afternoon.

4 to – 4:30 p.m. – Parent Portal and On-line Education, Virtual Itasca Area Academy of Learning
4:30 to 5 p.m. – A review of Mediacom services and some time visiting interesting Web sites.
5 to 5:30 p.m. – Secure and automated backup, Connecting Point Technologies
5:30 to 6:15 p.m. – On-line Banking, Affinity Plus Credit Union
6:15 to 6:45 p.m. – Tips on buying or selling on E-Bay. What tools can make things work easier and some of the pitfalls to avoid.
