Where it's Warm
Ciel's license application for the 138 12GHZ KU slot gives one an idea of future Ciel plans. It has some great graphics and a good explanation of the various slots and their use. I found it interesting that it explains that Ciel 2/Echostar 5 (129W) is too far west for total coverage of Canada, and therefore the slot laid empty for years. Now, we see an application for 138, even futher west. I would speculate that a good portion of it's capacity (if they get the license) will be leased to Dish/Echostar.

I do not think Dish will be too terribly interested in 138. They have 148 way underused. The western US does not have the satellite capacity shortages that the eastern US does. The West has few large DMAs, where the East is just covered with small DMAs that all want to be carried. Of course, Dish could go farther west with a "Western Arc".

Good point. I was just thinking that since 138 is 10 degrees east of 148, it would likely have less line of sight problems than 148 and might take some pressure off the eastern arc.

Add 157 back into the mix as well there and with the 9 degree seperation between 129-157 on the 4 satellites, you guys are all set for a great 22-24inch one Dish install...

But lets be honest, it aint happening ANY time 'soon'...

A DISH 1000.2 can hit 129/138/148 perfectly. No need to rebuild a new dish for that arc. I've already pointed a DISH 1000.2 at 129/148 simultaneously here in Phoenix just to prove its feasible. I imagine if there was a 138 I would have got that too. I posted a link to that trial on here before.

Even if there isn't as many DMAs out west, DISH may opt to carry several large markets nationwide on both arcs to help with LOS issues. Imagine having three arc choices for LOS if you live in apartment or on a wooded lot. I think it would be cool if PHX for example had its locals on a Western Arc, Eastern Arc, and the normal Southern Arc(?). Now they just got to master the Polar Orbit and all the North-facing apartments will be good to go as well.

In my case, 148 would point right at the trunk of a tall tree, which belongs to the owner of the property 2 houses down...he would never remove the tree for that purpose. The elevation would be 22 degrees in my area.
