There is a more heavily roasted barley malt called 'chocolate.' It has absolutely nothing to do with the cocao plant. It would be used in the Porter that Foxbat was alluding to earlier as well as Guinness Stout. When I was brewing I used it a lot in all the darker beers I designed. It is an essential in Dunkel Dopplebock....Chocolate has no place in beer as pineapple has no place on pizza. But that's just one man's opinion. YMMV.
I've been brewing for more than 3 decades. I understand what you are saying but many of the modern ales are, "infused" with flavors such as chocolate, coffee, fruit etc. It has nothing to do with the malt flavor/character. To me it tastes very artificial. But I'm not totally closed minded on the subject. I'm willing to try pretty much anything. Well.... except for pineapple on pizza... I approach that with a crucifix and garlic. There is a more heavily roasted barley malt called 'chocolate.' It has absolutely nothing to do with the cocao plant. I once had pizza with pineapple on it. It also had anchovies and the pineapple was the only way it could get past my lips!I've been brewing for more than 3 decades. I hear ya. Anchovies are kind of like girls with a ... Never-mind. Lets leave it at that. After all we were talking about beer/ale.I once had pizza with pineapple on it. It also had anchovies and the pineapple was the only way it could get past my lips!
Mmmm... love real deal Polish kielbasa from the local neighborhoods in New York where I grew up. But I can say unequivocally that it doesn't belong on pizza either. To further derail the OT, there was once a pizzeria in town that had a Polish pizza: kielbasa, sauerkraut, special sauce, and cheese. It was amazing good, mostly because they used an authentic (i.e., non-commercial) kielbasa.

Yes I've tried it and don't care for it at all. I know others who enjoy it though. It's just not my thing.Fully agree with the first part. But my whole family loves Hawaiian pizza. Have you tried that? Yum!
I too like flavored sodas and pinapple (and ham) pizza. But chocolate flavored beer just sounds revolting. Maybe you were lucky.Well, I must admit I like Pizza with Pineapple, and I enjoy exotic flavored sodas (Pepsi Mango, Pepsi Berry, haven't been able to get Pepsi Pineapple).
Anyway, this topic reminded me that some years ago, I wanted to give this Chocolate Beer a try, but it was a very limited edition, and I wasn't able to get it.

I like their Breakfast Stout, along with their Porter, also.I get more coffee and bourbon from KBS than I do chocolate. I get a lot more chocolate from Founders Breakfast Stout, which has coffee and chocolate with no bourbon. Still more chocolate in the nose than on the palate though. Yuengling Hershey's Porter is very in-your-face with the chocolate, similar to Samuel Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout although I seem to remember this import being smoother than Yuengling when I tried it years ago.
