Cheap Blu-ray Players Due September

The only lesser name player I'd go for is Oppo. I have one now and will most likely wait for them to come out with a Blu Ray model

Oppo is not lesser named. It may be less well known than Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, etc. However, Lexicon, Arcam, Rotel and Meridian are not as well known to Joe6Pack as well.

To me, Oppo belongs right alongside Yamaha, Denon, Harman Kardon, Onkyo and Pioneer.

Funai is not a Chinese brand. Many assumed so. I don't see "cheap" Chinese Blu-Ray players hitting the market this year. Part of Blu-Ray's mission was to put the profit back into hardware. HD DVD messed up a lot of that. HD DVD's earlier than expected demise makes sure they can reclaim some of it.

I do think we will see $250-300 units from some of the off-brand makers this year. I'm not so sure about $200.

There will be no full featured 2.0 BD player on shelves anytime soon(18-24 months) for under $400. Sony originally wanted BD to be a very high profit margin product, Toshiba crashed that party. Now that its only BD Sony can start to implement that goal again, not to mention recoup losses they took during the war. If you have been watching you would have noticed that BD prices have indeed increased since the war. Don’t hold your breath waiting for Sony to license another company to come in and undercut them with very cheap prices to kill their high profit goal.

So BluRay will not replace DVD for the same reason that LD did not replace VHS, because it was a niche format. I get it.

But DVD eventually replaced both LD and VHS... hmmm

Something else on the horizon?

Is blu ray hd better than satellite hd?

Maybe, might depend on your equipment. I have a 720p Epson projector with a 120" screen. I can't tell a difference between Dish network HDPPV and a Blue-Ray Disc on a PS3 player. I don't plan on replacing my projector any time soon, so I'm returning the PS3 and waiting for cheaper players and hopefully some that will have analog audio hookups as my Onkyo 505 doesn't have HDMI audio. I agree with a previous post that if they don't lower their prices soon, people will continue to find their HD content cheaper elsewhere. I doubt most people with 50" or less screen can tell the difference even with the 1080p tvs.
