Charlie Chat Recap 3-09-09

last night i saw a graphic containing a logo for G4hd, but just as it came up my wife changed the channel. what was it in reference to? I don't see the graphic in the chat wrap up.
Was that the G4 logo at the end of the chat? If so, it was a "thanks for the help in putting this chat together" mention, not a coming soon. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see (E! and) G4 in HD on dish, but it probably won't be happening anytime soon.

I don't know why it came up, they weren't even discussing hd at the moment it did. the only thing i remember is that it was definitely a G4 HD logo. I recorded the chat last night, just didn't have time to review it. I guess i will have to wait until i get home tonight to scan it.

HDTV penetration was around 13% in 2007, was nearly 25% in Fall of 2008, and I suspect higher now. Those numbers are Nielson numbers via Google.

Only 13% Of US Households Have HDTV; Nielsen Releases HDTV Household Estimates
Almost Quarter Of Households Get HDTV | Benton Foundation

I can go to both my parents house and my in-laws and watch some HD (my parents through a basic HD cable package that is free and my in-laws through antenna), but they both just got theirs in January. Neither one really care about HD one bit to tell you the truth, but they if they are moving (slowly) into the HD generation, I have to believe that many others are too.

Neither one will spend the money though on the packages to get more HD that is available.

Just out of curiosity, where did you get that 10-15% figure from? The US as a whole shows a 25% HD penetration rate (this encompasses people with an HDTV and an HDTV source). Is Dish Network that far below the US rate, because that would be troubling. It shows poor performance on their part.

In the VOOM lawsuit filed last year it was about 10% of Dish Customers, 15% would be a huge 50% growth rate. So, probably somewhere in there is the current number.

Lots of people went HD this year, even most of my older relatives. Most of them get their locals OTA in HD but aren't getting additional HD from cable or satellite at the moment. Thus I suspect it depends on how they measure penetration. I don't know of anyone (friend, neighbor, relative) that doesn't receive some HD programming.

I read through the lines last night as Charlie spoke about FX and Speed HD when he clearly said their contract with them isn't up for renewal until the summer. So I take it that Dish only talks to these companies when there contracts are up for renewal which would make sense of why we never get new HD when the channel launches. Dish waits until contract renewal time and then always adds channels late.

So I guess we will get AMC HD IFC HD WE HD E! HD G4HD when all their contracts come up for renewal and who knows when that will be.

I've been doing some research, and there's just NO information out there about BET J HD.

If you google "BET J HD", you get SIX hits. 2 here, 2 at DBS Talk, the BET J website, and something unrelated. There's nothing on their website about HD, even in the press release section.

I suspect this is going to be a similar situation to WFN. It will be launched as an HD-Only channel for packaging reasons, even though it's an SD-upconvert. Then, whenever the HD version is ready to launch, they'll switch it over.

I highly doubt you will see ANY HD on BET J tomorrow, but I'm also sure that will change somewhere a few months down the line. (For those that haven't looked, WFN now has plenty of true HD.)

I do see this as a good sign, that despite the Smithsonian mess, they recognize that SOMETHING needs to be added to the Platinum package. I wonder if the hold up with Speed/FX could be related to adding Fuel-HD to Platinum. Fox may be demanding the SD version be included as well

Are any of the newly announced HD Channels already uplinked? I don't see them on the uplink list.

There are plenty of TMP channels uplinked...they are probably being tested there. On Wednesday, they just need to switch the names and channel #s.

Congrats , if you get a picture with Taylor Swift I will be doubley jealous.

Spike HD and Comedy Central HD. Would like to see FX, AMC, and ESPNU in HD and would be set. Even Comcast has AMC HD, but deal with the contract sounds like a good point.

Except that were mentioning FX and Speed last fall as well. I'm guessing they would like to have them but Fox is extracting a pound of flesh which will only lead to E* reciprocating at some point in the future. :) I would have negotiated everything at once if it were I and been done with it. I think it would have been cheaper to buy a bundle and not just bits and pieces at a time. I thought the Fox-owned locals carriage rights renewal would have been the point in time to negotiate all this stuff.

Did you guys notice how Charlie said that they base their new channel additions on customers clamoring for them (he said they keep track of them somehow). And then he said BET Jazz was one of the most requested HD channels... Really?... Which one of you guys have that on your want list?... I mean, it didn't even exist yet, but it was really one of the most requested?... Hmmm...

I think the logo was just in thanks of them providing CES award footage.

Never heard of it until this thread today... Most requested channel, huh? Hmm, indeed...

G4 did a lot of the video and production for Dish at CES. Alot of the CES video shown last night was shot by G4.
