The South Korean company announced it would be launching a new line of Smart TVs that will support a Remote User Interface technology that could behave as a client to the DIRECTV Server.
This new technology will replicate the user Interface and features of a DIRECTV Server without the need for any additional set-top boxes.
Samsung said it was working to complete development of the DIRECTV HR44-200 “Genie” server, which will be launching in 2013.
The technology is based on a protocol known as RVU and is designed to work in harmony with RVU client functionality in Samsung’s 2013 line of Smart Televisions.
Consumers will be able to watch live broadcast and stored content from a DIRECTV server on Samsung Smart TVs.
“We applaud Samsung for their efforts in developing their RVU TV and set-top box solutions,” Romulo Pontual, executive vice president and CTO for DIRECTV, said in a statement. “Their support of the RVU initiative has been instrumental in the success of this innovative technology. Our mutual customers will be delighted to get the full DIRECTV experience on their Samsung TVs without the need for a separate set-top box in that room.”
