Can't move external Storage between vip622 receivers

This sucks... When I activated the external storage I asked that if I had two dvrs could I swap the hard drive between them. I was told yes before activation. This worked for about two weeks. Now when I try to swap I get this 866 warning message saying that it will delete existing contents of the hard drive if I reconnect it to the second dvr. Upon calling Dish they confirm that this is now the way it works and was sorry. Was any one else under the impression that you could connect the same drive to multiple dvr's and not lose your shows.

This is the way it has worked from the beginning. I believe you get three times to switch back and forth then you are done. There has been talk of being able to share among receivers in the same household being enabled with a future software release.

You are correct, only 3 times to unhook it and re-connect it, then you have to call in and reset it.

So far, only "talk" about sharing dvr shows in the same household, it will be sweet if they do it though.

Digital copying is prohibited so what did you expect DISH to bend the LAW again?
IF (and note I said "IF") Dish knew from the start of EHD that there would always be a "3 and out" rule they are guilty of the most disgusting marketing practices and should be sanctioned by the FTC or a class action lawsuit.

But at this point I don't think a "digital copying" prohibition is going keep them from getting the "unlimited swaps within the same house" feature up and going in the very near future.

And if they are actually so stupid that they didn't realize they could never let ulimited swaps happen they MUST offer refunds of the $40 and some kind of compensation for those who spent money on drives they have no other use for.

This is interesting. I have a 622 and external storage and considered consolidating my 211 and standard boxes by shelling out $149 plus monthly by adding a second 622. I specifically asked about sharing the external storage device between the two 622 units and the Indian gentleman in sales said I could certainly take the external drive between the two 622s. There was no talk of a limit or not being able to do this at all. Recording movies in the bedroom on one 622 and watching them in the living room would certainly be a selling point. Anybody that says that moving recordings within your own home between 622s is a violation of digital copy laws and if done would mean Dish is bending the law is a complete idiot. Verizon and some other providers have a multiroom setup where you can share programs between the DVRs. Moving an external drive around your own house is essentially the same thing! Obviously you shouldn't be able to take the external drive between your house and a friend's house and plug it in to watch content. But we are not talking about that. We are talking about same house, same account! I am sick of these idiots and their digital copy laws argument. They are equating sharing an external drive between 2 DVRs on your account to account stacking between multiple family's homes or complete outright satellite piracy. It is not the same thing! How irritating.

And to Dish- You really need to get your information straight. Between being told that you CAN move the external drives between 622s in your own home and then finding out here you cannot, and the other problem of the salespeople not telling customers about a $5 charge for not having a 622 hooked up to the phone line or Ethernet, this is getting ridiculous. Dish owes it to their customers to get the facts straight. A lot of people would add external storage and a second 622 to their account with the idea that they can move it between rooms.

Ridiculous!

Did anyone notice the deafening silence on last nite's tech chat about this feature?

I suppose that the obvious answer that no one sent an email asking about it is totally possible And it's totally possible I'll win the lottery tomorrow.

Gee, it's going to be tough finding time to pick out my new Lexus while I'm run back and forth from the den to bedroom with my EHD.

Where were you guys when this feature was activated and it was discussed on Charlie Chat and run into the ground by SatGuys???

The 3 times move limitation is a first run issue that is being worked on and will be changed with an update. This is the way it has been from the beginning and was widely discussed.

I saw it here beat to death back in July/August but I've got to believe what a Dish rep tells me over what is old news here. A Dish rep telling me I can move it back and forth in early November seems like the truth. I am not going to think, "oh, the guys on Sat Guys back in July said there was a limit of 3 changes, so that must still be the case months later, even though a rep is telling me I can change freely between 622's on my own account now in November."

Things can change you know... what didn't work then may work now. You should be able to believe what a Dish rep tells you.

You seem to imply that SatelliteGuys is the official support site for Dish. I would have thought the Tech Chat existed to add to the sometimes out of date/wrong/misleading/confusing/a bunch of horse s*** Dish web page.

Anyway the point isn't that *I* needed to know about the future of "3 and out". I don't give a s***. The point is Tech Chat stonewalled their viewing audience because they obviously don't have a clue when (or if) the problem will be fixed.

Let's call a spade a spade.

Well, if you can't get good information about Dish here, what are you doing here? Complaining?

Oh, wait...

:D

Good, bad, right, wrong.... any way you slice it, this place has a lot of information about Dish. Far more than I have found anywhere else, including the Dish website, and usually more accurate. The good, the bad, and the ugly, I for one appreciate this site.

How about the person who posted the original thread do some searching! This topic has already been chatted about. I, for one, have posted some information and commented about this topic. I also, have posted information about the stupid reps and knowing, just about 1 percent of the real information.
