Can I Save Some Money?!

Hi Gang,

Love this forum. I've learned a ton.

So... right now I have a pair of VIP 772 boxes. My mother lives with us and so we each have a 722.

I seem to ONLY watch HD stations. I'm spoiled. My mother, however, isn't so picky and lives for movies and Law & Order. She watches Lifetime and LMN.

I really need to save some money!

I finally ran a CAT5 connection to the back of the DVR on my side of the house, but need to do the same on my mom's side... since we don't use a land line for telephones. As I understand it, that will save us another 5 bucks a month, once she's connected.

So... I'm leaning toward some HD ONLY package... but I'm still not sure if that is the least expensive option for us.

Any suggestions?

Up the MIL's rent. LMN requires AT250 or AEP. The HD only package doesn't offer either channel.

Are you currently on the DVR Advantage plan? That will save you a few bucks and keep Lifetime on the 200 package. And which HD package do you have, essential or ultimate. Essential would save you $10.00 if you are on Ultimate.

1. Drop DHPP. If you ever have a problem, call up and add it, then drop when corrected.

2. DVR advantage 250 would drop one of the DVR fees.

3. Drop down to HD essential.

DHPP won't be an issue for 4-5 months (he's credited) hooking each rec to Ethernet automatically saves $10 an month. and there's more than likely more than enough stuff in HD to satisfy you MIL, so if you want to drop to the HD only she should still be content (especially if you're footing the bill)

DishComm to the rescue. Its in the menu under menu>6>1>8 I believe. You'll have to enter the R00 number from your MILs 722 in to your 722 and then do the same for hers. Once they can see each other in the DISHComm menu, your AO fee for her second tuner will be gone.

Replace the two 301s with a 322 connected to a phone line. You'll save another $5.

I'm a little confused. Are you saying that I do NOT need to have her 722 connected to the home Network, and only MY 722 needs to be (stay) connected?

Also... just to clarify... she is actually MY mother... not my wife's mother... and I don't intend to ask her for a penny because she sank tens of thousands of dollars of her money into our house to make it fantastic for my wife and me, and, of course... her. If I told her that her two favorite TV channels were going away, she'd say "That's fine." and I'd never hear a single complaint. She lived through the depression and didn't have indoor plumbing until she was a teenager. She's a bit of a saint when it comes to her children and grandchildren and so I'm happy to give her anything she likes.

Having said that... I too would like to drop the silly channels she seems to like the most.

Wouldn't I have to buy the 322 though? It'd take awhile to recoup the initial cost just in that savings.

Call and see if there are any promotional upgrades you can take advantage of.

Outside of the broadband and phone connection, there is another connection called DISHComm. DISHComm allows two ViP receivers to see each other and the receiver that doesn't have the phone/ethernet connection can remote connect with DISH through the other connected receiver. If you can not get the two boxes to see each other using the above mentioned steps I gave earlier, then try plugging both boxes directly in to the wall and repeat.
