Please tell me that I can hook a local antenna to my 811 receiver to get local HD channels and that I don't have to buy another receiver to do so.

Yes, you can hook up a local antenna to the 811 to get ur free LOCALS in HD. I'm doing the same thing here with my 811. However if you want to keep watching any HD that Dish provides you will need to upgrade in the coming month..

What is that about?

I just got the 811 today and I have to upgrade it next month? Something doesn't seem right about that.

811 locals off air and new receivers

welcome to satellite guys.us

Dish announced on feb 9 or 11th cant remmeber new receivers will be coming out on or about feb 1st. The vip 211 almost same as 811 and vip 622 (hd DVR). Those are both new mpeg 4 and mpeg 2 receivers. the 811 is only mpeg 2 and 8vsb for off air ( antenna hd locals). You will need a new receiver if you want hd locals (in certain markets)from dish not off antenna, and some more hd channels, Universal hd a couple new voom channels, espn2 hd and Food network and few others to come online later in the year.

You will only need a new receiver if you want those new channels in hd. Otherwise the 811 should be fine for awhile. This does not surprise me as they will deplete the old stock of 811's before giving new receivers ut. Where did you get your 811 from?????

In the 811 menu's there is a local channel button in there , you can scan for and add Digital off air and analog off air channels and those will be added into the guide if you telll the unit to get locals from the off air source.

I got my receiver from my local install guy. He had to order it from DISH cause he was out.

Should I hit him up for a new receiver?

You should at least try and see what he says. The 811 will not be obsolete after Feb 1st., you will continue to get the HD channels that are in MPEG2. If you want the new HD channels then you need the VIP211 receiver (MPEG4 receiver).

No signal problem

What receivers are out there?
