Tuna fishing? Parcells has opt-out clause

Will Bill Parcells become a free agent -- again?

It's a possibility, hinging on whether Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga's sale of his majority ownership of the team goes through, sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.

When Parcells joined the Dolphins as executive vice president of football operations last year, his deal included a one-time out clause that allowed him to walk away, with the rest of his $12 million guaranteed contract fully paid, no strings attached, if Huizenga sold the team.

Earlier this year, Huizenga agreed to sell 95 percent of the Dolphins to New York developer Stephen Ross. Huizenga hopes to close on the deal by early January to ensure that the capital gains taxes on the sale remain at 15 percent before President-elect Barack Obama takes the oath of office in January, Mortensen reported.

Parcells' contract specifically states only Huizenga can be in authority over him. Once Ross officially becomes majority owner, Parcells has to notify Ross within 30 days that he intends to exercise his walk-away clause and collect the full balance of $9 million, Mortensen reported.

At that time, Parcells would be a free agent. And any team that wants his services would not owe compensation to the Dolphins, according to the report.

Among the teams sources say are on Parcells' radar are the New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns and the Oakland Raiders. However, if Parcells' son-in-law, New England Patriots vice president Scott Pioli, is interested in any of those jobs, Parcells is unlikely to wind up with that team, Mortensen reported.

Parcells could extend his opt-out clause by one year, but as presently written, the clause doesn't extend after one season, according to the report.

OMG!!! IF he were to come to Oakland....that would mean the OLD MAN would be on his death bed...!!

Detroit turned him down before. While I respect what he did in Miami, i wouldn't want anybody here who will walk in a season or two. We need a long-term fix, nobody will turn this mess around in 1 season. There are maybe 10 NFL quality players currently on this roster, 40 or more additional players are needed. That's at least 2 season's of work just to get back to mediocrity. (Like the Wayne Fontes/ Barry Sanders years).

How about Scott Peoli from NE ?

I have never been a fan boy Bill Parcells, but if he can around this team here in Miami who last year was just as bad as this years Lions....he can do it anywhere. Remember, he placed Parcell-esque people in management type positions....so even if THE Parcells body is gone...the thinking will still be in place.....

I dont know paul, I would take the old days of 7-9, 8-8, 9-7, 6-10...lol

I dont think it would happen either, because Parcell, would want control, and we know thats something Ford wont do

Ok, im a little sour over my teams complete colapse.
The Jets need a complete overhaul.

Favre, man was I excited to get him! was the next comming of Namath.
My bet is hes done.
I still would make that move to get him if I had to do it again.

However, if he leaves, we dont have a QB. We are in trouble. Our back up stinks.

Mangini needs to be canned ASAP!
I blame him for this dissaster. A great coach would have motavated
this jet team not to lose four games out west.

So, I would love to see Parcells back. Great coach but always short term. Hes like Larry Brown.

Cower would also be a great pick up....

What a lousy morning...No jets in the playoffs:(

I thought Marty Schottenheimer was going to get the job? That way he can get Cowher.

A few notable candidates.

I've heard everything from Pioli & Josh McDaniels, Shotty & Cowher, Kirk Ferentz (Iowa), Steve Spagnola, and so on.

Either way we go, I think we need experience. Inexperienced Head Coaches work sometimes, but they are usually surrounded by other guys on the staff that have experience.

In the Browns case, we had a rookie GM, a rookie HC, a rookie DC and a rookie OC. It was clear this collection of inexperience didn't know how to respond to adversity.

I heard Wayne Fontes is interviewing for GM. Rich Kotite is looking at making a comeback as Fontes mentioned he's interested in interviewing him for the Coaching job.

I don't mean to burst anyones bubble here but I don't see that happening. Bill will be here at least for one more season if not more.

Remember he knew this sale thing will be going threw...and rumor has it that he and the possible new owner don't hate each other, but they sure as hell don't exchange Christmas cards either. This is gonna cost the new owner some serious cash to KEEP him. PLUS now I hear that he has expressed that he misses coaching a little bit. IF that is true, Sporano better watch his back....

Don't get your hopes up. I can't see the Big Tuna in Silver & Black.

Listen....Tuna is all about 2 things....MONEY and his legacy. He is now, just like those guys that buy up crappy house...does a major overhaul and refurbishes them, sells them at a profit and then moves on. He has done EXACTLY what he set out to do in Miami in record time and almost 2 years ahead of schedule.

From what I hear, HE is the one leaking all this info about his contract and possibly wanting to skip town...and considering ALL the reclamation projects all over the NFL now to secure his legacy even MORE ...AND his lack of closeness with the future ownership of the Miami Dolphins.....I would say his chances of going are 50-50 right now.

I believe if this new owner (which by the way you can hang keys on his face!ugly!)
keeps things as they are and bill continues to have complete control of the fins,he will stay. if the new owner wants to have his nose in things then I see Bill leaving which would really stink. This story at the end may just be that,a story but it couldn't have come at a worse time when the team is in the playoffs trying to get a win in the post season for the 1st time on over 10 years. Bad timing.

OK, We all pretty much understand that Parcells is the guy to rebuild your team in a short manner ....
IF Bill is already busy, who is the next person you would look to to do a major rebuild job ?

Coach and /or GM team
Who would you go for if you needed both .... ala Detroit and as it turns out, many others ?
