Can a satellite box damage your TV?

We have an HD box where the coax tip burnt off of the back of the receiver. We have a tv sitting in our garage because it quit working. I am wondering if this HD box could have possibly caused the TV to go out. We got the box fixed and have discovered that it is fried AGAIN while hooked up to our new TV. Our house has not been struck by lightening as far as we know. Anyhow, what are the chances that our house would have been struck twice in two months. When we called Direct they acted like there is no way the box could have caused our TV to go out....so...I am looking to you guys for your opinion.

I'm no electrician but it sounds like you may have an electrical grounding issue going on and may want to seek help right away before a burnt up tv and receiver is the least of your worries.

Electronic equipment can go bad at any time. The electronic equipment be defective before it leaves the manufacturing plant or be good for many years. It could be damaged in transport or while it is being installed. It could be damaged from an electrical shock that a person produces. To determine that the box ruined the tv could be done,but it would probably cost as much as a new tv.

Do you have any other DirecTV receiver's or TV's? Is your satellite dish grounded? Yes it's possible, likely no, but possible. When you say your TV is fried, what exactly happened?

It's all the installers fault. Call Directv and tell them he blew up your TV. I am sure they will buy you a brand new 60".......

DirecTV Damaged two televisions in two months

I have had the same problem!!! Three hours after installation, the HDMI 1 Port of the DirecTV receiver was destroyed, as was our Samsung 50" Plasma. Nothing else connected to our television was damaged - the DVD player or Channel Master DVR. DirecTV refused to take responsibility, but replaced their damaged receiver. Seven weeks after purchasing a new replacement television, the DirecTV receiver again damaged our new LED 3D Smart TV. The HDMI 1 Port on the television, where the DirecTV receiver was connected, is totally destroyed. Nothing else connected in any of the other ports of the television were damaged. The brand new television stays on for about 15 minutes and then turns itself off. How many people have experienced this problem? Is there a weak link through the DirecTV receiver that allows damage to the set. Needless to say, I am nervous about connecting yet another set to their box. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

They denied responsibility and did nothing. Within 7 weeks after purchasing a new 3D Smart Samsung TV, the HDMI-1 port on the television, which was connected to the new replacement DirecTV receiver was destroyed - and now the television will only work about 15 minutes before shutting itself off. In both instances, no other electronic that was connected to the television was damaged - a DVD player and a Channel Master DVR. Absolutely convinced that the problem is with the DirecTV receiver. Do not want to connect another television to their receiver and want compensation for the television sets damaged through their receiver! It has to be the link to causing the damage.

I would look at where the dish and the coax is being grounded out. When I first got into this hobby, I installed a big dish and grounded it to the water spout out side like the cable company did, and that was a bad thing. I killed the lnb on the big dish and blew out a usb plug on the pc and killed the video out on my 4dtv box. The electric tried to ground itself to the water spout,but the water line never went under ground just under the house and it was not bonded to my electrical main ground. A year later I finely removed the old coax from under the house and it still smelt like burnt plastic and the to coax cables were bonded together. Check your ground.

There's several things that can cause this and most of them are related to improper home wiring (swapped neutral and hot can cause some exciting situations). The other issue to look for is equipment plugged into multiple separated outlets.

I once had a device that happened to be wired internally with the common and ground directly connected to each other. While this is fine most of the time, if plugged into a mis wired outlet, YOU'D KNOW IT RIGHT AWAY! lol.

Anyway, sounds like the OP needs to call a electrician to do some testing of the house wiring and grounding of the house and equipment.

OP should also invest in this simple $4 device to check their outlets.

I suspect that's why grounded plugs on CE equipment are relatively scarce anymore. Any schmuck can buy a duplex outlet at Home Depot or Lowes and not wire it right; there is such a thing as too easy.

I did Directv for many years...........thousands of receivers installed and not one TV damage report. Even lightning strikes did not get as far as the TVs in many cases.

But that was ten years ago. Before this thread I would have just assumed a crossed neutral wire or some other defect in the home electric wire. But these few examples of the same defect & damage to a TV really screams for an expert to dissect a damaged DVR & TV to see what is going on. Some offshore factory is doing something incorrectly.

Independently verify a correct ground and neutral circuit to the outlet (s) in use.

This is something new,in my opinion!

As stated in other posts you need to call an electrician. You have a problem some place.

If Directv receivers had a problems like this there would be thousands of people complaining about it. Sure it's possible that one receiver here and there could have something happen. To have it happen twice on two different receivers and TV's, there is a problem in your electrical system.
