Do you have an 8300 now?
lets see:
- better menus (quicker, easier way to search for shows, better management of lists)
- a season pass manager like TiVo or DirecTV or Dish
- bigger standard hard drive (with direcTV I get about 100hr of HD)
- better HD picture quality - when I had my HD TiVo box and CableVision it looked better then then the SciAt/Cisco box. I just could not stand using the tuning adapter any-longer so I left.
- more reliability in actually recording what I want to record.
- VOD with 1080P support
I might have more but thats all I recall for now

Yeah, I'm still using the 8300. This is my second one; the first one crashed after four months or so wiping out a number of shows I had recorded for future viewing.
When I went to CV's office in Oakland after buying my HD TV to pick up the HD box the woman at CV explained to me that the DVR recorded 100 hours of standard programming and 24 hours of high def. This surprised me because what I like to do is record 8 - 10 episodes of my favorite shows and wait for a rainy weekend to watch them. Didn't work out the way I had planned!
I think I'll call CV later today and ask about an upgraded cable box. I'll post their answer later.

At present CV only offers three HD boxes. All made by SA. If I recall they are the 8300, the 4200 and a 4300 (?).
When asked why only boxes made by SA the rep replied they were the only ones compatible with CV's technology! As usual the reps aren't given enough information to answer a simple question so they wing it with their answers.

I really hope they get new boxes soon. I had an 8300 that died a month ago (it had lasted about 6 months), exchanged it, that 8300 lasted two days, exchanged it again, that one wont boot, went back a forth time and was told that they have no new boxes, just old one recycled. The rep told me that they are waiting for new equ....

I have had success with an external 1TB SATA drive to augment the internal disks of the DVR. Over the past two years, I have had to reboot the cable box about 10 times, but nothing more serious than that.
I am a new guy here switching over from FIOS next week On the HD dvr can you access SD channel want that for recording to DVDs.??? I don't like the squashed picture from Hi_DEF.

Correct, in fact I hear that CV will stay with two SD/HD boxes (4200 and 4250). They are not buying DVR-boxes. They are deploying their RS-DVR (network dvr) service soon.
I understand that some have had a bad time with 8300. I haven't had as bad a time as these accounts. Mine does crash every 2-3 months, but it reboots fine. You need to be careful to power-up the remote disk before reinitializing the cable box. I have found the 1TB external drive to permit recording of hundreds of hours of HDTV. We save multiple episodes of favorite programs, just as others say, and we do the Tennis coverage for things like the French Open.
I have done the same thing. IF you record an SD channel (not an HD channel the puts black-bars on the right and left), THEN you can full-screen copy it to a DVD UNLESS the channel deploys strict copy protection. Some DVD recorders (notably Sony) detect the 'copy protection' (used by some NBC channels, perhaps others) and decline to transcribe the DVR content.
