Hi
Just registered Jan 17, 2008- :)

Will take me a while to get the hang of the site- am not a regular forum or chat user.

Joined to find info on C and Ku band reception.

My main work is as large appliance (washer, refrigerator, etc.) repair person. Some electronics background. Live in Hawaii- have phone and power but no cable.

Have been directed to Galaxy 5, 97W for a particular Ku band channel, SMTV.
There is a company in Georgia offering dish/receiver packages for this satellite and channel for about $150, plus shipping.

Wondering if it is possible to get C band channels with a small 30 inch (76 cm) dish. I notice a different LNBF is necessary, at least.

Also curious to hear what kinds of programming people might recommend that is available from satellites visible in Hawaii.

Not sure how I will receive answers, so will check back here for replies.

Aloha

welcome :wave to the forum

Boy havent had many people from the islands looking for FTA :)

You wont be able to get C-Band stuff with a 30"...a few people have been able to get decent results with a 40" dish but being in the mainland has some advantages for satellite reception :)

check out thelist for various satellites. I used the sat finder program and put in Honolulu and it looks like 97W is about a 20 elevation...that's low but doable. Normally we say a good southern view but being that far west you need a good EASTERN view for that satellite.

If you can get a larger dish, there are a few satellites on C-Band that have stuff aimed at Hawaii. Here are the lists
www. global-cm.net/MPEGlistPacRim.html
www. global-cm.net/MPEGlistCBandUS.html

seen a few satellite feeds from Hawaii and a fair amount of sports feeds. The only time we see a UH game (non national broadcast) is when the opposing team is broadcasting it back to the mainland (got to see UH Mens B-Ball against Nevada last week)

Most C-band satellites serving the U.S. have coverage to Hawaii,
but an antenna at least 10 feet in diameter is advised.
For C and Ku-band reception, this antenna should be solid type
such as those made by PATRIOT or even TRUE FOCUS, in multipanel---
and use optional stainless steel hardware as well as grease all mechanical bolt connections in an effort to reduce corrosion problems common to salt-water locations.

Ku-band signals vary widely...it is best to study footprint maps found on LyngSat - Lyngemark Satellite for a particular channel. Others have found adequate reception from 97 West / Galaxy 25 Ku-band on antennas anywhere from 90 to 120 cm in Hawaii. The 76 cm specials common in the Lower 48 simply do not get enough signal to be worth considering for use in Hawaii.

Thanks for all the help, folks, much appreciated. Have been on a job deadline (still am, actually) and have not had time to check out suggestions yet. Seems like a good forum here- looks like i have a lot to learn.

Is DW TV (Deutsche Welle TV) gone from FTA?

Looking for a 4:2:2 feed for testing
