B5 had a defined story arc. 5 years was the time-frame. It was a blast, but I wanted more episodes (hell, I even dreamed more stories...which was pretty weird...)
BSG is, in my opinion, a "closed-ended" show as well. The "this has all happened and will happen again" stuff, 4 more cylon models of the final 5 now revealed, the occupation of New Caprica, etc...
They've sort of written themselves into a corner, in a sense. They can't do the "Cylon attack of the week", as that'd be pointless and get old. "Ship in a bottle" stories get old too. Starbuck's supposedly been to Earth and finding the occasional "food stop" planet has been done.
They need to do something really show-shattering in 2008 (stupid planning) or the ratings will sink.
And I agree, if BSG doesn't do well and/or ends, it leaves Sci-Fi sitting their hands wringing wondering what to air...
