Blockbuster to close Dallas Distribution Center

My local BB rents new releases for 2.99 and that drops to 1.99 a few weeks later. Most other rentals are .99. They also sell used dvds for 5 for $20. That is $4 each. Plus they have unlimited movies for I believe 8.99 month.

I'm telling ya'll Blockbuster is going to go out of the business of physical stores and shipping dvds. I'm predicting by next year it will be a streaming service for DISH subs only and the movies will be what you already have from the platinum channels. DISH should of never bought Blockbuster and they are now rectifying it by closing down each store that has their leases come up for renewal. Now the physical warehouse dvd shipping/returning hubs are being closed. Streaming only is the future and dvds and blu-rays only have about 5 years left if that, before they will be phased out. Streaming will become the norm. I don't know when was the last time I bought a blu-ray. They were too expensive when they came out with them and they haven't got any cheaper. $24.99 - $34.99 is too high for a blu-ray. Especially when you can get a dvd for $5.00 - $10.00 a Walmart. There isn't that much difference if you upconvert the dvd to high def output. Blockbuster was the wrong business to buy a the wrong economic and technical time.

Like the cellphone companies, the BB stores are way larger than needed. Cell phone stores are larger than BB and they could sell phones from a Keiosk in a mall court yard.

Where'd you see the onward and upward part, because when I read that news there was nothing positive to go with it, just that 500 more were closing absent any optimism to reassure the rest of the program/stores.

OT: Saw a BB Kiosk for the first time ever last week. It's across the street from a store that is "moving" to the internet. It should have said "moving across the street to the kiosk."

Except that BB does not own the kiosk, Redbox does now, BB never owned them, they just licensed out the Blockbuster name.

I asked my BB and they said they were not going anywhere....
As far as not much difference between Bluray and upconverting you are completely wrong...........there is a huge difference in picture and sound quality!!
I do agree with you on the Bluray prices.........i buy mine used at a local pawnshop

Yeah I knew that, I had typed something to the effect of consumers don't known the ownership difference which would have made that line make more sense, but revised it out and didn't change the context of the rest, heh.

Either way, with the Blockbuster now with it's '7 DAYS LEFT' signs up, ironicly it outlasted the kiosk across the street which is now gone.

I wonder what the revenue distribution looked like between the 3 corners, a B&M BB, BB Kiosk, and Redbox at one intersection. Now just the Redbox remains after this week. Surely it's B&M BB > Redbox > BB Kiosk, but wonder how close it was.

Well. ALL the other video rental stores in my location closed shop during the last 5 years so ALL the BB stores closing isn't surprising. The only player left for physical disc rental is going to be Coinstar/Redbox. When everyone else goes to digital downloads then the ISP's are going to jack their rates way up and place severe caps on bandwidth. Bandwidth wasn't an issue when a typical download was 5MB. Now with downloads exceeding 2 GB we have caps and other crap.
