You can now rent and stream new movies from Blockbuster to PC, Mac, Android, Roku and Samsung Smart TVs and Blu-ray players.

Android Police reports that Blockbuster has quietly launched an on-demand service for Windows XP SP3 and newer, Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 and newer, Samsung Smart TVS and Blu-ray players, the Roku 2 set-top box, and Android 2.3 "Gingerbread" and newer. Notice anyone missing from this group? That's right: iOS and Windows Phone currently isn't supported.

Blockbuster On Demand isn't a Netflix killer, but rather competes with the likes of Google Play, Amazon Instant Video and other online movie rental services. There are no options to purchase and store movies in the cloud: it's merely a rental service that offers a wide variety of fairly new and old titles across a number of devices. If anything, it's staying true to its roots, only moving from physical media to instant, on-demand digital rental access.

Interesting Android only not iOS/Windows yet. I suppose they will come out with an iOS app eventually, and maybe a Windows app.

As they close stores at least they are working to make streaming more available.

Yes, but can forget getting HD streams at anything less than $4.99. I can rent a BD at a BBV store anywhere from $.99 to $2.99. And why would anyone rent from them when they're already renting from well established services like Amazon, iTunes and Vudu? What can they offer that isn't already offered?

Since Dish doesn't want to operate b&m stores anymore, I'll be dropping BB@Home as soon as my 1/2 off deal expires. I'll probably reup with Netflix disc service for catalog items and use Redbox for new releases. What really makes me mad is that I'll be paying more per month for dvd's, thanks to Dish not wanting to invest in BBV stores. Chains like Family Video show that b&m rentals aren't dead and can actually do well as a business.
