Hi! I was experiencing problems restoring recordings > 300GB from my external HD to the EMPTY internal 500GB HD. I would get a message saying there wasn't enough space. After deleting all recordings on the internal HD, I noticed I apparently had available space for only 55 hours of HD recordings or 330GB of SD recordings. That first number seemed too small, so I thought I should reformat the drive to clear up some apparent errors.

I had found some secret commands to do so, so I attempted to format the drive. All seemed fine. The interface said it was 'cleaning' the drive, and that my unit would restart after it had done so.

After a few minutes, the unit rebooted itself and a few minutes later, instead of displaying the usual interface, the front panel red (recording) lights would start blinking, alternating. I thought: Oh, I damaged the drive! I decided to test my theory by disconnecting the SATA cables from the drive, to no avail. The unit would not complete its boot cycle. The red lights blink non stop.

I tried disconnecting the unit from the power supply, and plugging it back in, to no avail. The symptom continues. It's not the HDD. I tried plugging the unit directly to a wall outlet, to no avail.

By the way, it's out of warranty, and I own it, so DISH may not come to the rescue. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Odd that your problem began while formatting the drive, but it does sound for sure like the receiver is fried. I assume it is a 722 or 722k?

Look for bulged capacitors, as it may be the issue.

You could add the protection plan to get you receiver replaced at no charge.

they will ship you a ra receiver without the protection plan.

I believe that is only if it is a leased receiver, owned receivers are only covered by a 1 year warranty. Also if the receiver shows signs he has been inside even if leased a charge may be applied after the "defective" receiver is returned.

In another post he admits to replacing the 500 GB HDD with a 2 TB HDD and reformatting the receiver with "secret commands".

Dish will still send an RA without the PP, however, it will be the shipping cost plus $90 for OOW owned receiver. Cheaper, in that case, to just add on the PP

If you reset factory defaults normally that corrects this specific issue.

Nope, it won't even boot up when doing this, so how are you going to reset factory defaults? This is a corrupted firmware issue, and it's in Boot Recovery mode. If he'd just leave it alone long enough, it usually will recover by itself just fine.

I was referring to his mention of the hard drive only showing 55 hours.

IIRC 55 hours of HD or 350 hrs of SD is normally what a 722K reports as being available when it's empty. Doesn't sound like he had a problem, just trying to transfer more than the user part of drive could hold?

Joey Signal Loss but plays DVR just fine

Looking for NEW DIRT Assistance.
