Blind scans that stick

Just occasionally I will be blind scanning a satellite and it will stop part way through and the box will not respond to the remote. It happened this morning on AMC-4, stopping at 53%. Resetting the box works of course, it is just inconvenient.

Following the advice of previous posters I separate the scan into H and V, this allows one or the other to complete and gives an idea of the freq. that is causing the problem. By identifying that freq. and resetting the scan parameters you can isolate the scannable frequencies and at least get some of the channels. As I recall the problem on AMC-4 was about 11.732 (I forget whether H or V).

So the question is what is it about these odd frequencies that put the Coolsat into a panic?

weird. I have a Coolsat (5000 & 8000) and havent had that issue before. Maybe its a case of "transponder overload" where the box has too many transponders scanned in from too many blind scans and the box goes wacky.

I try to clean out my TP list on the satellites thast I scan the most (feeds satellites) once in a while. You can use Channelmaster (link is in the FAQ) or manually. If you remove a TP and there is a channel attached, the channel disappears too :(

I was thinking TP Overload too, but mine has never done as you describe. It will get quirky though. I clean mine out when I get over 1000 TP's. Just did it night before last, went from 1076 down to 532 and could have gotten more, but I got bored and went on to something else. I do most of my scanning with my Pansat, and it acts up when I get TP numbers in the 1300's. It's been a while since my Coolsat has done this, but the TP numbers are probably around the same. Good Luck!

I've had similar problems with the CS 5000 and yes I also believe it's TP Overload , so I regularly delete TP , which reminds me I should do it soon.

Since deleting non-active TP I have not had any issues.

Thanks Iceberg! I was having the same problem - just happened today. Got on the forum and saw this thread. I have been deleting tp's in my Coolsat 5000 for about an hour now and am blind scanning again. Wouldn't you know it's the bright yellow button on the remote. DUH!!! You learn something everyday. Thanks

Channelmaster would be easier :)

upload the channel list from Coolsat, edit it in ChannelMaster and load it back into the box. Otherwise, yes the yellow button can get a workout :)

The phenomenon of 'transponder overload' hints at poor database management by the Coolsat software, which can become confused when reading in channels it has read before. Normally one would provide a bug report to the manufacturer, it would be fixed (eventually) and a new firmware issued. But as far as I can tell there have been no official revisions to the firmware.

Actually, I think, TP overload is a result of not enough memory. Once you start to fill the memory with TP's, eventually you have to much info in your memory and it cause's an overload. Just my opinion????

Voomvoom: you are quite possibly correct. However, usually, good software will constantly monitor not only what resources are currently available but what data already exists. The physical size of memory and current data are known. The difference is what you have left to use.

In addition what is not explained is how after several blind scans on the same satellite you can end up with the same channel on totally different transponders, only one of which is actually true, as I have seen in Channel Master.

If you are correct, then the following hypothesis might prove true: at some point in the product cycle of Coolsat, 4000, 5000, 6000, 8000, the physical size of memory may have changed. In this case, if the software has remained constant then the 'TP overload' will be worse in the earlier models. I cannot speak to this, I have only the 6000.

The one advantage of the 8000 is you can manually add transponders without adding them to the list :)

When I scan with the 5000 and find a HD feed, I go into the manual scan on the 8000 and change the info (on the manual info screen you can change anything on there by typing over it) and it will not store the TP in the TP list but will store the channel. The 5000 & 4000 if you removed the transponder, you also removed the channels associated with that
