Really said this story. THIS is one of the MAIN reasons I would seriously consider not letting my son play football after the age of 10. Hurts even more that he is a former Hurricane, with everything that program has gone through.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - The Buffalo Bills' Kevin Everett sustained a "catastrophic" and life-threatening spinal-cord injury and his chances of regaining a full range of body motion are very small, an orthopedic surgeon said Monday. "A best-case scenario is full recovery, but not likely," Dr. Andrew Cappuccino said, one day after performing a four-hour operation on the player. "I believe there will be some permanent neurological paralysis. ... A full neurological recovery was bleak, dismal." Cappuccino noted the 25-year-old reserve tight end did have touch sensation throughout his body and also showed signs of movement. But he cautioned that Everett's injury remained life-threatening, saying the player is still susceptible to blood clots, infection and breathing failure.

Everett is currently under forced sedation and breathing through a respirator as doctors wait for the swelling to lessen. Cappuccino said it will take up to three days to determine the severity of the injury and the recovery process. During the operation, Cappuccino repaired a break between the third and fourth vertebrae and also alleviated the pressure on the spinal cord. Doctors made a bone graft and inserted a plate and four screws.

Yep, no matter what level they cant' get some guys to stop ducking their heads down right before impact. Lets hope he recovers some, but unfortunately this looks really grim.

I am hoping for the best, but expect the worst. Let's hope he is a fighter and not a quitter!

This is terrible. I hope they are just giving the grimmest outcome.

I read an article where the doctor who did his surgery reported that before going into the four hour long surgery to re-fuse his vertebrae that Everette actually had feeling in all his limbs, and was able to slightly move his legs.

I hope that is a positive sign that recovery is possible. Even if he recovers, he most likely will never play another snap of professional football.

I hope and pray he comes out just fine. I remember in 1998 watching my beloved Lions when Reggie Brown made a a tackle, and right after the impact he fell to the turf like a rag doll. It was obvious he was unconscious. He quite breathing, but thank God the medical staff got him breathing again. He had surgery, and the reports were not good for him to walk again either. However at the press conference when he left the hospital to go home, he took short steps. A few years later and lots of re-hab and work out exercises, he had fully recovered. But of course no football anymore. Which I imagine to those who go through that is the last thing they want to do.

Don't forget that lineman - Utley (I think that is his name).

What about that Patriots receiver from the late 70's or was it early eighties? I can't remember.

Reports this afternoon about Everett are very encouraging.
The doctor that did the surgery , said today that it is looking much better. and that he expects him to walk again.
I heard that about 3 pm today. :)
