Wishful thinking...

on my part. I noted another poster mention that the signals are appearing and disappearing...more tinkering! ....to be continued...

So far behind?

Verizon FiOS National Channel Lineup

Behind in movie channels? yes Behind in standard channels? Sure. Behind in highly lucrative sports programming? No way.

.
Believe it or not, not everyone is a sports fanatic. I enjoy my local professional sports teams and can see their games on DirecTV, cable, FIOS, Dish, whoever.I suppose if I liked another team, other than my local team, I might appreciate the pro sports approach of DirecTV. But I am not that big of soprts fan and feel that DirecTV doesn't care about the other stuff like premium and HD nationals.

even fans of local team is still screwed on Dish because you never know if your game is going to be in HD ;)

Whan I first signed up , thats how I looked at it, I looked at over all programming first.
Back then the word was If you want Sports you look to D*, if you want Movies you look to DISH, if you just wanted TV, look to Cable.

That said, I started well before the HD push was here, at the time I started, the only HD available was OTA networks, nothing else.

My OTA antenna went up all the way back around 1999 or there about.
I enjoyed my Network programming , I actually NEVER watched Network programming BEFORE I got the HD antenna set up, now the majority of what I watch in Network and my RECORDINGS show the same.

So when it came time to decide on a better provider, I looked at the fact that I was a HUGE sports fan, NFL, College Football, Hockey and Baseball and found that D* would answer all of them.

I never have been a big Movie guy, so for me the choice was easy.

Even today Dish comes no wheres close to my Sports demands, so moving to them is never a consideration.

So you see, I am not a fanboy as you said, I am a realist that went with the provider that could cover the programming that I wanted.
This is how EVERY person looking to sub to a provider SHOULD go by, programming they need and cost should be priority 1.

I believe it. I wasn't a hockey fan until after the lockout, and to this day I still have no interest in MLB:EI and NFL:ST. Now that I'm hooked on NHL:CI I can relate to the fanaticism though.

But I am not that big of soprts fan and feel that DirecTV doesn't care about the other stuff like premium and HD nationals.
Based on their major business moves over the last couple years you're right, they've clearly put sports coverage as their priority. Not that it's been perfect on that front -- their spat with Versus prevented me from making the switch last September. Luckily I added Shaw Direct Canadian sat service so I got some HD hockey coverage where Dish was lacking, but there were still cases where both Shaw and Dish failed me on HD coverage when my friends with DirecTV had the game.

So now with the Versus fiasco resolved and the HD for Life promo, I went to the website and scheduled an install date.

Based on what your stated desires are for programming, DirecTV is probably not the best choice, so why not switch? You'd be happier getting more of the programming you'd want, and you'd probably save a fistful of bucks in new subscriber service credits in the process. Prolonging your "misery" by staying with DirecTV benefits no one, including yourself.

Now, has there been any NEW News on the status of the D10 being fixed ?
Other than numerous CONUS signal problems, there's no indication that anything will happen until after the high power testing (scheduled to begin no earlier than Wednesday) is completed.

Thanks you !

Now we have some positive news (potenially after Wednesday) as to them working on this thing.

I guess we had other positive news about it already as we definately KNOW that D12 is up and operational. and nothing was screwed up when the move took place !

I am in the Tampa market. All the NFL an MLB games are in HD and not all NHL games are in HD.... some Lightning games with any provider are in SD unless you get Center Ice, which cable offers.

In all honesty, I don't see Dish Network as a movie lovers paradise either. While they have a few more premiums in HD, they don't have enough. I probably won't end up switching again until I am back in a FIOS neighborhood ( a frue movie lover's paradise.) I just wish DirecTV would broaden their horizons. They have all this capacity and a ton of fans wanting more non-sports content. Either that or a merger of DirecTV and Dish that could actually complete with FIOS and the cable companies.

Ditto :)

That's why I've never considered another provider. I have FIOS in my area and am a land-line and 'net (their 'net svc is awesome in my area) subs but I don't have the TV svc for the same reason. They can't match DTV's sports choices. If that day comes, and it won't be before the current ST/DTV deal expires, I'll look at FIOS again.

I realize that FIOS, for a movie fan, is the answer. I like movies as well but DTV is giving me enough choices for now and with additional D12 HD programming upcoming, I'm content to see what's coming there.

While all of the games you mentioned maybe produced in HD, Dish isn't guaranteed to carry it in HD, even for local residents. For instance with Dish the Rays game maybe in HD on Sun Sports today and Dish may carry it in HD for local Tampa Bay residents. However, Tuesday's game which is also in HD on Sun Sports may not be carried in HD on Dish even for the local Tampa residents. Dish's problem is they don't have that many channels dedicated to HD RSNs. So Dish moves around which RSNs are in HD on any given night.

Basically with Dish you aren't going to get all of your local teams HD games, even when they are available in HD. So it isn't just a MLB EI, Center Ice or NBA League pass issue.

I don't have Dish and I am not considering getting it. Both Bright House and FIOS have the full time Sun Sports HD channels. My favorite sport, hockey, sees a fair amount of SD only games for the Lightning. I have had another set of locals here in FL that carried the Panther games and they get more HD games than the Lightning. DirecTV or not, if it is in HD, all Bucs, Lightning, and Rays. This may have been a problem a few years ago but not now.

Ok, I understand that and for various reasons, Dish would never be something I would consider. I was just trying to reinforce the point Iceberg was making about the problem that Dish has with HD sports.

I guess it just boils down to me having been spoiled with FIOS. I took it for granted that I received all 26 HBO/MAX HD channels, most Showtimes, most Starz, and all 4 E/W TMC channels in HD. And that was about a year ago. I had to move so I have just DirecTV now. When I had DirecTV and FIOS there was never anything on D* that I couldn't get on FIOS except Sunday Ticket (which I would never order anyway) and Trailer Park Boys on The 101 (which I have seen each episode of 3-4 times). So after being spoiled with that. I look at the channel lineups for both my DirecTV and that of Dish Network and see nothing but gaps. There are only about five or six HD nationals I really really want and all available premiums. I wold happily pay DirecTV another $30-$50 a month if they would give me all available HBO/MAX/Starz/TMC in HD, along with ID HD, Tru HD, History International HD, IFC HD, and a few others like G4. I vote to subsidize another satellite. I thought that is what we were getting with D12. How many RSN's are there actually still out there before they take their mind off sports and add other content? They must be pretty close to having them all by now. No?

I still think DirecTV and Dish should merge. They could carry all locals from the smallest of market's independent networks and build an arsenal of premium channels. Not to mention, all RSNs!

It's too soon to pass a pass/fail judgment on what D12 has or hasn't given us. It may wind up being a disappointment like D11 was. But since D* has decided to try and fix D10 before launching more than the 5 channels we've gotten so far, we have to wait and see. We know there are some promised channels that haven't launched yet due to the D10 fix. There also been confirmation (at the other site) of at least another wave of HD channels to be launched beyond the announced channels which have been promised by the end of the June by the same source that told us what the initial 5 new channels would be and that we would get them on 5/19. BTW, this same source did indicate that while more premiums are coming later, west coast versions of some of the missing HD premiums may not be in cards.

I know it's hard to have patience, but D* does things much more slowly and deliberately than E* does. I'd say wait until D12 is full to declare it a failure. It does have the capacity for 80 HD channels, 5 of which we already got. However, I will admit that D* has sometimes shown recently a reluctance to make a deal so D* will have to prove that can make deals for that many new channels.

Let me add this, as long as rural customers only have D* and E* as viable choices, I don't think we will ever see a merger. They already tried once and failed.
