We have always had time warner cable and I have finally had enough. I want to switch. I am tired of not getting the Big Ten Network and with NFL on Thursdays around the corner the lack of the NFL Network. Not to mention all of the HD that DTV offers. We have 5 tvs, with 1 HDDVR and 1 regular DVR. I did a little investigating and it appears that it will cost $300 for the HDDVR with $100 rebate covering the price of the Regular DVR to startup if we were to equal what we have now. Is there anyway around this? If I were to switch I would really like to add another DVR making the grand total: 1 HDDVR, 2 DVR, and 2 regular tvs. From what I can see that would be $400 startup. Is this correct? I know that dish is offering a free HDDVR but I would really prefer DirectTV.

If you do a little searching you can find several threads on this topic, but the short story is to call DirecTV (more than once if necessary), tell them what competing offers you're looking at - be specific and mention the names of the other carriers - and see what they offer. Tell them you really want to switch but not for $400 upfront.

I think they typically tend to give programming credits as opposed to waiving the upgrade fees on the equipment, but I have seen some people who have been able to get free/reduced startup costs.

IF you had ordered before D-10 lit up you could have probably gotten a good deal. There may be some wiggle room now, but D* is gaining subscribers like crazy so they have the upper hand and are in a position where they really don't need to deal at all.
