I'm looking to get an ATSC tuner for my phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy S8+, which has a USB-C port. Is there anything you'd recommend that has a good tuner and works well? Also, what app(s) do I need to use it?

I have no experience with one, Amazon has several to choose from though. I would guess they come with their own app?

Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of those, but those are mostly no-brands, so I want to know if anyone has one that works well before I buy something.

I don't blame you. You should be able to return it if doesn't work but that can be a hassle.

There were never any "name brand" tuners that would work with devices as far as I know.

I haven't laid hands on a tuner that plugs into a device so I can't comment on those other than to ask what you plan to use for an antenna. The ones that Amazon offers (they're probably all the same under the plastic) come with a small set of rabbit ears, a UHF loop and an F81 adapter that suggests pretty short range and little to no moving about.

For out-of-home streaming, DISH's AirTV is fairly popular. The Tablo devices are more expensive and fetch a modest monthly fee. The TiVo DVRs are quite pricey if you don't get them on a steep, steep discount with lifetime service. There's probably reports elsewhere on Satellite Guys on how well (or poorly) each works for OOH.

I have an airtv and I love it. The thing is, I'm going somewhere where there's frequently no data signal anywhere so I'd like to have a tuner just in case I'm on the road with no signal

Then as Tampa8 suggests, make sure wherever you buy from has a generous return policy.

I would caution that absence of wireless signal is often accompanied by absence of DTV signal.

How well do the signal meters work with digital OTA?
