Bell hiking satellite TV prices (double-dipping)

No surprise, they need to raise rates to cover the lost revenue from US Subscribers who are no longer in the 82W footprint.

Beats me how in these economic times a company can go deliberately out of its way to kill an extra revenue source.

Well, they forced their own hand. The idiots at Bell conspired with Directv to go after CanAm and then when the search and seizure found CanAm also offered Bell gray to the US they were screwed. They had no choice but to cut them off to appease the CRTC and their competitors who could cry foul. I wouldn't be suprised if the 82 footprint had something to do with this also.

Thats what happens when a teachers union runs a company.

While I do not agree that my PENSION fund, not my UNION, bought BCE, you need to get your facts straight. With over $120 billion of my dollars to invest, they generally do it very wisely. Go to a major mall in Canada or rent an apartment and you are probably dealing with my PENSION fund.

Rant over:D

Fair enough, but whoever is running BellTV is badly misguided and out of touch. Look at all the consumer comments below the CBC article. People are fed up.

Why do think I did not want them to buy BCE?

->Look at Xvu or whatever they call it now - never made money
->Local phone - can not compete with Rogers; people yelling into the phone to India when they have problems (a fire took out our above ground lines over a year ago and it is still not fixed)
->Cell phone - market is saturated; good ole Teddy got the Iphone

That leaves CTV and its specialty stations to make money-> yawn.

Seriously, the television market in Canada is very, very boring...

Have a great day.

Canadians are lemmings when it comes to choosing a source of televsion entertainment. Blindly accepting simsubs is just one example. The only reason I still have Starchoice is that they do not simsub HD channels.

I wouldn't call it "blindly" accepting, I'd call it accepting because no matter what you choose, Star Choice, Bell or cable TV, they all have exactly the same thing for a price that seems to be within $5 of each other when you add in all the extra charges.

I've checked all avenues available to me for my area and there really is no good reason to switch from one to the other. One compelling reason to stay with Bell is that they are the only landline phone service in my area. If you "bundle" any 2 or more of your services (internet, TV, phone, long distance, mobile phone etc.) you save $5 a month on each service making it just a little wee bit cheaper than the competition. Not to mention more convenient because all of your services come on one bill.

Now, having said that............their customer service in India (or wherever else they have call centres) is absolutely abysmal. When I signed up for internet a few months back after they ran a DSL service to the rural area I'm in, they screwed up my address so that my modem and startup kit (DSL filters, account info. etc.) was sent to a location probably 900 miles from me. Did I call and complain? You bet I did! Did it correct anything? Not one bloody thing! I got the usual "I'm terribly sorry" with an Indian accent. He took my info. for a second time and still when I log into my account online the wrong address shows up. I did receive a modem but none of the other parts of my startup kit, no account info, no DSL filters etc. So I called and requested to speak to someone in Canada. I was connected to a very nice CSR in Canada who seemed to understand what I was saying and took all my info again.....for the third time. When all was said and done and I thought she was taking care of it she came back on the line to tell me that "can't remember his name" could help me with that............FROM INDIA!!!!
F*$K!!!! So to make a long story short, a week or two later I got one DSL filter in the mail, none of my account information etc was ever changed. My address as it appears online is still for a place 900 miles from here!
Funny thing is they somehow manage to get my bills to me every month.
Still have yet to take care of it 'cause I do have internet service and I'm still too worked up over it. I'm going to do it on principal, because I have NOT received the customer service I was promised. On top of it all when I was signing up for the service they talked about a $2 modem rental fee. I told the CSR that I already had a DSL modem which I would use and they would not have to charge me the $2. To which I was informed that even if I didn't get a modem shipped to me they would still charge me the $2 modem rental fee........so I said to the CSR "so it's not really a modem rental fee is it?". She really didn't have a good answer.
Crooks.

K, I realize I hi-jacked the thread but I think it's in line.

The way I see it, Starchoice do not "Cut Off Service" to customers that are South of the Border, they say they are allowed to give service thanks to the CRTC. Bell say the exact opposite, that they WILL cut you off because that is what the CRTC is mandating.....WTF...

If I could see the Anik birds I would love to try StarChoice but until my neighbours house burns down I will have to wait.

Got to run, I can smell burning, I need some gasoline........lol
