I am just curious is anybody here is using a barebones HTPC for DISH Remote Access? I saw a small ASUS recently at a MicroCenter and I was thinking that might be a nice, reasonably priced HTPC for just that application.
I was thinking that given the cost of say a Roku player for NetFlix vs. BluRay Disc players with streaming vs. Booksize PCs, a person could also set one of these up near a TV and it would allow NetFlix streaming as well as a HD version of TV2 from 622/722/722k receivers that are equipped with DISH Sling Adapter.
These Atom-based HTPCs work great for SD, but for HD playback particularly from the Sling Adapter, they are problematic. I bought a Zotac Zbox with 2nd gen Ion GPU. It can keep up with the HD stream from just about everybody except my Sling Adapter. For those cute little boxes without a very beefy GPU, there is no hope for HD playback.
In the end, it would probably cost you more money than just waiting for the Sling Extender to come out "soon." (Added quotes before someone else does.)
