backup mine PS3

mine PS3 have stop reading discs after 7 or 8 years and i ordered a new a one, i tried hookup external hard drive and didn't work to backup all mine stuff, i don't know why, it would backup to mine USB drive but my USB drive isn't big enough, if i go buy a USB cable how long will its take to move all mine data to PS3 to PS3? thanks

There is a transfer utility on the PS3 that allows you to transfer from old to new PS3 via ethernet. You must deauthorize the old one from the PSN, the authorize the new before you can do the transfer. HTH.
 
done!, only took me & my brother 40 minutes to do it

i have one more question from mine understanding these newer PS3 systems don't play PS2 games but why can you still make a PS2 memory card? is its something i backup by mistake

Original PS3's hard hardware to emulate PS2's. The software had support for it and it has been carried forward. It seems there has been renewed interest in PS2 compatibility so I suspect they have just left it in from the early PS3 days and you will potentially see more use for it.
