AT&T Wants Their Receiver Back from a Burned House in San Diego

This was already reported, and AT&T has already made a statement on this...

And here it is.

This customer initially called AT&T to discuss other communications services. After she was transferred to Dish, the disaster policy Dish has in place was not followed. This customer will not be charged for service cancellation or equipment fees—that is our policy, and the policy of Dish, in times of natural disasters. We have spoken with this customer to clarify our policy, and we are committed to taking care of all customers affected by the fires. We are providing several no-cost options for fire victims to suspend their phone, broadband and satellite service, including a pause of service, with no equipment fees.

I coudn't imagine the what the couple was thinking when they were initially being told your SOL then to goto a supervisor and the same thing.

Sure bet AT&T is going to be doing some serious making up with the couple after that.

yeah first thing honey when we get home don't forget to grab the satellite reciever. Cleanup on aisle common sense!

Yea, but I bet they will have absolutly no issues charging back the retailer who sold this account if they are still within the chargeback period!

But on the other hand, just because these peoples house burned down, why does this now become AT&T and DISH Networks problem and why should they be expected to take a loss on this customer?

Its the customers responcibility to have home owners insurance, and its the customers insurance which would cover the cost of the damaged equipment!

Not for anything, I had a house fire back in 2005 and it fricken ruined just about everything I had in my house that was worth any value.

My Cable modem burned up, when I moved into a rental house I went to Best buy and bought a new Modem. I didn't go calling comcast crying about my house burning up and demanding a new one for FREE.

When my DISH Network satellite receivers got destroyed, I didn't call DISH Network crying about how I wanted them replaced for FREE. I bought all new ones when I moved into my rental house, and the insurance company paid to replace them.

When my house burned down, I didn't even call AT&T to cancel my phone service. The wire sat on the ground in my back yard for 11 months until I rebuilt my house and moved back in. I still paid for my service, the only thing I did was drop down all the features and added call forwarding to my rental house so I would still get my calls.

The only thing I cancelled was the electric service and gas service because I had no choice because I had to tear down the house. Then the gas company screwed me for $2500 because they had to dig up my front lawn to install a new line because the meters where no longer allowed to be installed in the basement!

I know these people are going through rough times right now, but when my house burned down in 2005 and when I had a fire at my office in 1993 nobody gave me a hand out or a break on any of my bills!

Sounds like you have more fires than the average log cabin (which usually is never more than one). :D But I agree with you.

That reminds me...
All ships are mine sweepers at least once.

I agree, their insurance should cover it. But Dish/AT&T should be accommodative and wait for the insurance to pay.

I agree 100%, give the customer 8 months to a year to pay for it!

I wouldn't expect anyone to pay for the receiver right after the fire, because there are other more important financial obligations.

BTW, I didn't have insurance the first time in 1993. It costs me and my parents $75,000 for the initial repairs to re-open the shop and get back in business, and well over $200,000 over the course of the next several years as things got repaired and replaced and I still got a 75 x 150 foot section of my shop that still does not have a roof. Almost lost my house over this because we where so far behind in the mortgauge payments both for the house and at work.

We did manage to get through it :)

We lost a house by fire several years ago and was shocked to receive a bill for around $800 for cable boxes! Their thinking was my insurance company would pay for them, and mine was that since it was a total loss that exceeded the limits of the Insurance Policy (330K paid) I would have to pay for them! Got Lawyer involved and negotiated a price of around $350.00 total and paid it before it went to collection, which it would have.

Yes I did submit the $800 bill part of my claim. I did the claim myself since it was going to cost me 10% to outsource it. Insurance Adjuster said it was better that I did it myself instead of someone else and pay for it out of my pocket.

There may be some software available now but in 2001 there was not and I had replacement value coverage, so I created my own. One important thing I pass on is not to forget to add Local Sale Tax to your Claim.

It was a time consuming project that helped the grieving process, and even if I did forget to claim something as all do, I have been told, I would not have received more. Even lost two cars, two pets and a lot of record keeping.

Insurance Company even paid to have family pictures copied from other family members collections.

Was really a rough time but still have the same insurance company that everyone said would cancel us because of such a large payout. Have had two houses since and several cars and even a few claims. Would not consider a change unless they would not want our business.

Over all it was a life changing experience that includes fire safes and a monitored house alarm system. Good luck to all that have lost their homes in California where I was born nearly 63 years ago and left at 17 months and never have visited since then.

Smart A

Boy, I would probably reacted a little different than the couple. I woulda been a Smart A**. Said something like as soon as we find the lump of plastic & metal will be gald to bring it into you. This is exactly why I have renters insurance. Never been burned out but have been ripped off a couple of times in my life.

We took pictures of everything in the house, put it on a spread sheet and then went on the internet and looked up the prices.

We had 1 small binder with a list of all the items in the house that where damaged and needed to be replaced, and several other binders with actual pictures of the damaged items along with a page from the internet showing the actual replacement value.

When I handed it to the insurance adjuster at their office, he looked over it and there was little he could say to dispute what I was trying to claim and they paid for everything I had in the binder :)

I ended up getting about $120,000 from the insurance company for personal property, and another $180,000 to rebuild the house for a total of about $300,000.

The only funney part was that I had Voom at the time, and they went out of business like a week after the fire. I had 4 receivers from Voom, and since I was a Voom dealer I had the actual receipt where they invoiced me out at $450 each. Since I only had the service for like 3 months, they gave me full replacement value :)

Well, it seems this story is spreading all over the internet and I'm sure that some of the media might pick it up. I don't think AT&T would appreciate all the negative publicity it is generating, especially with the speculation of them possibly taking over a DBS provider.

That's EXACTLY what I would have done. I would have gone to where each box was, scooped up whatever was left, put it in a box, and mail/bring it to them.
During the Katrina aftermath, D* was great, I have to say, they gave us 3 months of service gratis, free re-aims ( I had already re-done mine by the time they called, but it was a nice gesture). Looks like some common sense needs to be used in this case. Help the people out, for goodnesssakes.:)

Anyone else still channel surf? (why I love dish receivers)
