Anybody explain the science behind such a small antenna receiving vhf/ufh signals ?

I don't know how it works , but I don't see why they couldn't use them on satellite receivers to get locals. Especially if they are small and discreet looking. Imagine all the apartment people that could use them.

In some areas the signal level is so high, that even a bent paper-clip stuck into the antenna IN jack on your tv set will give you channels to watch.

Aereo has them right by the transmitters, direct line of site.

I think they are in Brooklyn. I would not call those transmitters "right by" Brooklyn. My guess is that the fact thatt they are ina massive array makes a lot of difference----although that does go against the notion that you are renting a single antenna.
