Apple's Secret for Success

and this is as ridiculous as iPad's inability to print - is an ethernet jack

Not totally true- The ipad can print but it is still awkward with present apps. Apple claims that with the new OS version due in November, printing will be a reality. Until then that is still vaporware. As an owner, I haven't felt any restriction because of lack of an ethernet jack. WIFI works better and is easily connected. When I travel to other places the connection is set to auto connect on non-secure wifi and with secure wifi, I just have to ask for the PW when the request window pops up , enter it and I'm connected. Once done, revisits to that location is automatic. It's so easy that once my internet connection went down and while in the backyard with my ipad, it auto switched to my neighbor's wifi that is not secured.

Comment about a virtual keyboard. It is a bit different but it is the best virtual KB I have ever used. I can type very fast on it. MY only complaint is with the auto spell checker that I have on ( can shut it off) as it sometimes finishes the word wrong. I just have to catch it and make the correction. While unnecessary, I do wish the KB had arrow keys. I still find it awkward to have to point to the word to position the cursor to backspace and correct.

When it comes to screen size- The Air has a smaller screen that I prefer for travel. I tried this on my Dell XPS M1210 and really prefer it to older laptops with 13-15" screens especially on airlines. The ipad is even better because it is so portable, yet big enough to prevent eyestrain. The main issue with the ipad is if you need to do content creation, like artwork, paint, presentations, complex documents, the laptop will be better, but if just consumption and simple e-mail responses, I'll pick the ipad any day of the week. Interesting advantage is that I can stack my ipad on top of the laptop and carry in the same case.

Mostly, however, I find the ipad better for just quick lookups around the house. I keep it handy on the coffee table when in the HT room watching a movie to iuse the IMDB app or Netflix app or my stock portfolio when watching Mad Money. I used to use my laptop but the ipad is so much easier and hundreds of times faster. From off to on and lookup I can achieve answer in under 30 seconds. The laptop needs to remain on all the time and web browser loaded to match that speed. Plus the battery would be dead in a few hours so the laptop requires a plugin for power.

Personally, I would buy a second ipad before an airbook but that is because my Dell does what it does so well. If I didn't have the Dell, I would consider the airbook. I like the idea of no hard drive but for now, would miss the lack of an optical drive. I think Netflix and mobile broadband everywhere will change that in the future.

Back to topic- I think as Apple has become bigger in recent years, it has become a trend setter in technology, making appliance and toys from the geekspeak tools we have had. They certainly didn't invent the technology but they sure did make it non-geek friendly. Techies will still prefer the open architecture of the PC. Nice there are choices for everyone.

Usefulness of gadgets - netbooks, tablets, smartphones, etc. - is very personal, almost intimate.

I'd never look for an ethernet jack on a tablet, but expect one to be on anything resembling a laptop, i.e. screen+keyboard.
I don't expect smartphones to print (would love to...), but definitely anything pretending to be more than entertainment should be able to...

Different people - different requirements.
And whether Apple & Co. has a new view on all this I don't really give a sh!t...

another example of how print is important to me and not available on ipad. I was screening my e-mail and received one from BJ's for some good coupons. But I needed to print them out with barcode to use them. No can do on ipad so I had to copy the link to a PC and then get to the page again and select those coupons to send to my laser printer. Can't wait for the new software so this will be available. Also, I understand that HP is making special printers that are directly app adaptable to the ipad. From what I understand the new printers can be accessed from any app to send the screen image to the HP printer.

Never had much of a need to print from my PDA phone but I have had that capability all along. The application comes with the phone! (htc TP2)

Had time today to go look at the Mac Air and favor the smaller screen model although both are nice. A little too much like a Macbook for my taste so I think I'll pass on this. Remember- this formfactor has to compete with my Dell XPS M1210 which I really like. Thin is no match for all I'd have to give up. I'll revisit when the Dell bites the dust.

I believe the tablet/netbook/notebook market will get a boost next year with Intel's 22nm technology to be announced at CES
Intel will reveal its next netbook chipset at ces 2011 - The Inquirer
And this will affect all PC manufacturers including Apple.

IIRC, Apple atm doesn't use Intel onboard video for one reason - OpenGL support.
They use an NVidia chipset with NVidia graphics. That applies even to their MacMinis, old and new.
That is also the reason they decided to skip the i3/i5/i7 on their Air line and stick to the old Core 2 Duos.

But this should change withe next generation Intel technology: Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge.
Intel won't be killing AMD and NVidia business any time soon, but they will certainly expand their share of the video market.

Apple's fiscal year ended 9/30 with a reported gross margin of 39%. Jobs said that future margins will likely be lower as the company will be focusing on higher end products which typically have lower margins. The iphone 4 has slightly lower margins than previous models. Also, Jobs said that in 2011 Apple will become very aggressive with pricing against it's competition as the new tablet products and competitive smart phone industry ramps up.
Investors can expect a 33% growth in investment value as a 12 month target but it is to be noted that past performance missed target estimates by >50% In other words, buying the stock a year ago at $185 the 12 mo. estimate target was $220 but it reached $319. The stock has had a good amount of volatility which gives good frequency of investment buy-in and sell-off, opportunity for traders with good long term growth for investors. Presently the stock sells for around $303 a share and pays no dividends. It is considered a good, net worth growth stock with one major Achilles heel. Steve Jobs. No doubt here, Steve Jobs is the single secret of Apple's success and if he goes, the stock will drop like a rock. This is the problem with a guy like Steve.
